widespread model / widely-used structure // (very loose version) widely-used practice/drill

After reading the complete text you provided, I immediately imagined the whole "exercise" or "drill" that is so repeated in general, but that doesn't apply to this group of musicians.

Adding live music to Buster Keaton films --which aren't talkies, of course-- is indeed the absolute opposite of repetition, of a pre-established model, of a prefabricated structure. It isn't going through the motions; you really have to watch each movie separately and observe. You can't just choose from existing tracks.

This rationale is how I got to "model", "structure", and even "drill", in the sense of "that's what you do", "that's what people are taught to do", "that's the common practice".

You can even translate it more loosely and go with "practice".

Why not?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Kironne - after some Googling I settled on 'widespread model' as I think it suits the text best. Thanks to everybody else for their valid suggestions too - a difficult call!"

widespread scheme

Scheme in the sense of a method, a way of doing things. You could also use "this widespread way of doing things", but that is much too wordy.
Peer comment(s):

agree Bubo Coroman (X) : maybe "this scheme, which was once is such widespread use..."

Thanks. Deborah, that's a good suggestion.
