español term

Piloto Aviador

español al inglés Técnico/Ingeniería Aeroespacial / Aviación / Espacio Occupation title
This term has turned up in a homework assignment for a medical translation course. My classmates and I are working on the translation of a medical report for a patient who has successfully undergone treatment for pneumothorax and anticipates returning to work. His occupation is listed as "Piloto Aviador." We students (whose medical term knowledge is ahead of our aviation term knowledge) are uncertain how best to render this into English. "Aviator pilot" would definitely be too redundant. Suggestions raised in class have included "airline pilot" or "commercial pilot," but some of us are concerned that there's not enough evidence to conclude he's one or the other of those and not a military pilot. Someone suggested "aircraft pilot." Would that translation be OK, or do the ProZ.com'ers have a better idea?

Like Jairo points out, "pilot" is a very broad term that may apply to a number of different jobs.

Henry is also correct in pointing out that in every day speech "pilot" is understood to mean "aircraft pilot" but the source specifies "aviador" so I believe it appropriate to be just as specific.

I hope we haven't confused you, Cynthia :)
Peer comment(s):

agree Jairo Payan : De acuerdo.

Sorry about that but I assume the asker is able to understand both English and Spanish. I don´t know whether there is a rule about this matter.
