washes

inglés al español Ciencias Medioambiente y ecología Informacion adicional del
These are areas that are dry most of the year, however during monsoons in Arizona, the hard ground fails to soak up water which creates temporary streams that we call "washes" here. I am putting this in context below:

Desert washes are also called xeroriparian habitats to indicate their relationship with rivers. Vegetation is more concentrated in washes in drier habitats, making washes highly visible from above
Change log

Jan 15, 2022 20:50: Jennifer Levey changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Jan 29, 2022 13:46: Beatriz Ramírez de Haro Created KOG entry

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): abe(L)solano, Beatriz Ramírez de Haro, Jennifer Levey

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Desert Wash
Washes generally flow intermittantly after heavy rains, a feast or famine of water that creates specific plant communities. Roadside water runoff can also create a microhabitat of its own. The sacred datura, also called jimson weed or thorn apple, thrives in this water runoff, making it standout along roads.

arroyo

arroyo, also called Wadi, Wash, Dry Wash, or Coulee, Arabic Wādī, French Oued, a dry channel lying in a semiarid or desert area and subject to flash flooding during seasonal or irregular rainstorms. Such transitory streams, rivers, or creeks are noted for their gullying effects and especially for their rapid rates of erosion, transportation, and deposition. There have been reports of up to 8 feet (2 m) of deposition in 60 years and like amounts of erosion during a single flood event.

In its last stretch, the river is joined by another stream which brings in the **desert wash** of the Quebrada Seca de Guaneros, a stream which drains 935 square kilometres (361 sq mi) over a stream length of 87 kilometres (54 mi). Many springs in the lower valley (broad valley with flood plains developed for agriculture) were tapped for irrigation development and the river in the lower section in the coastal valley is known by the ancient name of Rio Ilo (Ilo River) with coast line occupied by villages of fishermen.

neutral François Tardif : Wash se aplica tanto a un arroyo o reguero que fluye como al que no fluye en tiempo de sequía; quebrada seca deja entender solo la segunda acepción…

Sorry, I don't understand your explanation. The text went on to say: areas that are dry most of the year and specifically "desert washes", nor do I disagree with Bea's proposal of torrenteras! Also mentioned "ambientes xerioparios" which is uncommon, yes

Yo traduciría "washes" como crecidas de agua o aluviones producidos por las fuertes lluvias que inundan el terreno.

disagree Jennifer Levey : What you describe is called a 'flash flood' in English, not a 'wash'.
