Dear Colleagues,
I am translating college documents from Portuguese into English. My biggest doubt is when it comes to the college name. It's called "Faculdade AIEC."
The word "Faculdade" has a capital letter at all times (which tells me that it's part of the name of the college). The name is present at least one time in every single document, mostly in the heading. My question is, how do I translate it?

Option 1: Do not translate it..."Faculdade AIEC" is the proper name and no further work should be done there.
Option 2: "AIEC College"
Option 3: "Faculdade [College] AIEC"
Option 4: None of the above. In this case, I will be desperate for suggestions.

Hello Thayse! I really think you would be better of by posting a Kudoz question about it. These linguistic queries are usually dealt with that way and I think it might bring this to more people interested in these matters than a forum.

If the text contained Associação Internacional de Educação Continuada instead of the abbreviation, you wouldn't leave that part in Portuguese, right?

In my pairs - chiefly Danish, but also Norwegian and Swedish to English, the client often has an official English title or scheme of terminology for things like this, so there is a specific translation. Some universities like Departments of this and that, while others go for schools or institutes etc.

I check clients´websites as a matter of routine. Occasionally I find that the English version is ´under construction´and guess who is involved in constructing it
In that case I call the client (with the permission of the agency where appropriate) and ask.
If time does not permit, then I add a note when I return the job, saying that my suggestion is just that, and I would be grateful for feedback if any changes are made. ▲ Collapse

Many foreign universities have an "English" link on their homepage. In these cases, I typically use whatever name the school uses on its English-language pages. If this is the original-language name, I gloss it in English between parentheses (unless the meaning is obvious, as with "Universitat de Barcelona").
However, I do generally translate the names of universities' subdivisions: School of Medicine, Department of Physiology, etc.

No, the school doesn't have an English name. At Christine's advice, I spoke with the client, and guess what he suggested? That I help them come up with a name in English too...=)
