Hi, I got an e-mail yesterday that I'm pretty sure is a scam. I've spent most of the day today trying to find these guys and found nothing.. Here are the e-mails I've received and seen so far...

Subject: English Translator Needed
I am Austin Ward A Hiring manager (HM) With Realty Executives. I looking for translators who can translate from English to other languages {Reply Back with what you're Good at} to work with on a project, approximately 15,000 words {fields of expertise... Technical, legal, commercial, medical. Poetry & Literature}. Trados or Wordfast should be fine... If interested, please include in your reply your {PRICE per source word in $$} Also ready for a long time partnership And be available to read your email at least twice a day for urgent updates about the Project... This offer is open to translators based in the United States Only. Write me at hiringmanager AT realtyagent DOT com if interested.

--------------------------------------------------------

Good Day Translator,

Thank you for the email that you have sent in returns. I am really delighted that you are willing to work with us in this project. We are about publishing our realty magazines in different languages and look forward to meet a very reliable translator to work with... The document should be forwarded to you once you're being approved by the company and after it is been sorted completely by our source... The Source word is English and I want just a language translation now, so please name the best you can translate into so we can move on from there... it is approximately 15,000 words. It should be forwarded to you before the middle of next month if you are being granted the job, you must have it done by the end of next month or the first week in September....there will a screening exercise based on experience, timing and your estimate price... {Please reply back with the total amount you should be paid for this {15,000 words}... An upfront advance payment will be made possible to you before the job if the protocol agrees with your estimate amount....

Job is restricted to translators in some countries... Where are you located? If not living in the States please do not reply please.

Let me have your total estimate amount in USD so as to make an advance or full payment so you can understand the urgency in need of this project...

I wait to hear from you.

Austin Ward

Hiring manager (HM)

(559) 640-7039

2955 N. Marty Ave. Fresno CA. 93722

------------------------------------------

I checked the phone number and got nothing, just the same post on another translator website. The address doesn't exist. That particular road's numeration changes from 2700 to 3000 on the next block, so 2800 and 2900 don't exist. And try looking up realty agent companies!!

I did reply to the first e-mail, stating rates and payment policies, that we don't work for new clients unless they provide a non-refundable 35% payment upfront, as well as the total amounts for the project. It looks to me like he didn't read it.

I received this message originally through Translation Garden.

Hope this helps! Have a great day!

A hiring manager with an English name located in the USA and extremly poor English.

No mentioning of where he had come across your name, no knowledge of your language pairs or fields... and happy now that you have replied.

SCAM! someone is screaming and a chorus of echoes replies: Yeah! Scams and Scammers!

This Mr. Austin Ward has been around for a while now.

Agreed. I just wanted to let others know. I found the same e-mail as a job posting on another site and translators had already started bidding on the project.

Other clues this is a scam Jul 26, 2012

1) A non-translator (in this case someone working in the real estate business) does not generally know or use terms like: "xxx words", "field of expertise", Trados, "source word". If they are familiar with the translation industry, they would not be using those kinds of sites to post jobs because they will NEVER ever receive a proper translation.

2) A genuine offer does not usually try to tempt you with the prospect of future work: "long time partnership", "be available to read your

2) A genuine offer does not usually try to tempt you with the prospect of future work: "long time partnership", "be available to read your mail at least twice a day".

3) People sending you an e-mail (as opposed to posting a job) do not usually try to disguise their e-mail address from robots: "hiringmanager AT realtyagent DOT com"

4) He claims to work at "Realty Executives" yet the website is realtyagency.

5) He doesn't specify (or care) what languages you translate and he appears to have a specific project (15,000 words), but is asking for a range of specialties: "Technical, legal, commercial, medical. Poetry & Literature". What is the subject matter of the 15,000-word document?

6) He offers (without being asked) to make an "advance payment"

7) "Job is restricted to translators in some countries." (In fact the job is restricted to translators in ALL countries except the U.S.: "If not living in the States please do not reply please."
