The Proz Athens powwow took place at Polis cafe in central Athens, off Panepistimiou Street above the <i>Stoa tou Vivliou</i> ("Book Arcade" - an arcade with bookshops) on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 2.30 p.m. Unfortunately, many members who had signed up (and confirmed participation) were conspicuous with their absence. The weather was very hot and we sat outside. Given that Greeks hardly ever want to disappoint foreigners when it comes to national stereotypes (and <a href="http://www.proz.com/pro/63613" target="_blank">Bernadette</a> will gladly attest to it as she was the first to arrive there well before 2.30 p.m.), most of the people arrived late, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes.

The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly and most people did not know each other so there were happy just to socialize. Some translation issues were broached in a couple of isolated cases (like non payment or bad payment) but the conversation did not go very far. It felt as if being a translator was so tasking on a human being's ability to cope with working on one's own, that hardly anybody wanted to mention the slightest thing which alluded to this process!

The items discussed were the following:

<li> Who is who, as most people did not know each other and some pictures were missing or deliberately misleading (Look who's talking!).
<li> Whether translators should consider procreation as a viable alternative to a tedious existence and the consequences thereof (a matter elaborated to a great extent by <a href="http://www.proz.com/pro/1283" target="_blank">Evdoxia</a> and myself - both arduous proponents of the <a href="http://www.vhemt.org" target="_blank">voluntary human extinction movement</a>)
<li> Whether food was any good in the cafeteria (personally I wasn't the least impressed by the "Polis risotto")
<li> Whether late participants would still be arriving after we had all gone
<li> Whether conventional physiotherapy could afford relief for <a href="http://www.proz.com/pro/60824" target="_blank">Costas's</a> double espresso handshake.<br>
</ul>
The meeting ended at 6 o'clock and a faction of 5 decided to further extent the delights offered by this rare opportunity by indulging into Greek sweets at cafe Tristrato in Plaka (lemon pie, mosaiko, cheese cake, etc).
