Since I live in Italy, improving my Italian is "unavoidable". Actually, I have to work on my English more than my Italian. Anything I ever read for pleasure is in English (except for the newspaper). I only watch DVDs in English and I rarely watch Italian TV.

Language interference is usually a problem for expats. I know some here who start speaking Italian (to fellow English speakers) without even realising it. As a translator my vocabulary has increased immensely but my everyday fluency has suffered. My choice of words is not always appropriate (lots of legalese), my use of prepositions is not always correct and I lost my raunchy California accent years ago. Few people can place my accent. It doesn't sound Italian (yet) but it's a long way from Southern California surfer dude talk . ▲ Collapse
