According to the statistics in Portugal only 30,000 people in circa 10 million are deaf. In my family, two of my nieces were born with severe hearing loss but they both received a cochlear implant. Anyway, society should be more inclusive of these people. A deaf person should be able to go to hospital and be seen by a doctor in sign language and AFAIK this doesn’t happen in my country.

I used the alphabet at school!
Oct 2
At my boarding school back in the 1960s there were times when we were not allowed to talk - probably for good reasons. However, many pupils used the two-handed sign alphabet to get around this. Staff did not approve, but if the silence rule was to avoid disturbing others, then we sometimes signed between friends. They could always ignore signing, if they did not want to be disturbed.

I can still remember many of the letters, but I am very slow at signing words. I have never persuaded my husband to learn it - it would have been useful on occasions, to sign across a room or when we did not want our son to understand!
I have occasionally considered learning ´real´ sign language, but have never been in contact with a user of sign language long enough to get started.

Met some ASL interpreters
Oct 2
Met some ASL interpreters and their skills are fascinating, and so is the language. They told me their arms and hands ache for two days after an interpreting session. That’s why they charge a lot to compensate for the time when they can’t interpret.
The language is very visual, symbolic and conceptual, very interesting. The system and framework are much different from the spoken language. I know some basic signs and if I had the time, I would like to learn more.

The sign alphabet can only be used for first and last names, acronyms etc., nothing much more than that. ▲ Collapse
