I’m not surprised by the lack of answers to today’s Quick Poll as most of the “frequent flyers” are translators AFAIK…

it might happen, for expediency and for some short exchanges, but it's definitely not what should be a Standard Operating Procedure. And it's not a big deal if the interpreter is proficient enough in those languages.

Never mind that using "mother tongue" instead of "your native language" opens a special can of worms - what if your "mother tongue" is in fact your "father's tongue"?

I'm a native speaker of Spanish, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, but I became one of the few EnglishPortuguese interpreters in my area - and the interpreter of reference!- very quickly because here there's a great demand for interpreters in this combination, in order to avoid relay, especially in medical/pharma events.... Of course I do other subjects such us environment, social sciences, entrepreneurship, economy and finance... and in my combinations involving Spanish (ensp and sppt) but it is much easier for me to interpret from English into Portuguese than interpreting from any language into Spanish... it's amazing.Collapse
