Surcharge for working unsocial hours Apr 3, 2010

Actually, for statistical reasons, this may be a poll question which should not necessarily be asked on weekends, I guess. For disproportionately those that do work then will be answering. But I do sympathise with bohy and Marcia - this is just one aspect of the attitude of "accept the conditions, or we'll find somebody else" which shows the current imbalance of the market. We as translators and service providers should be in the position to set the conditions. Therefore, it should at least be standard practise to be paid a surcharge for weekend work or working other unsocial hours. So far, I have only actively demanded surcharges for rush work, as I personally don't mind working at weekends - but this makes me think now.
By the way, this may be another topic for a poll - who demands such 'unsocial hours' surcharges?

@Interlange: There are different forms of market economy and they have changed over time - the one you appear to be referring to with 'jungle' resembles Manchester capitalism where the interests of workers and employees don't count. I don't think this to be the right model for the market we work in..

more often than not Apr 4, 2010

I ended up working last weekend because someone contacted me for an urgent but small job....but it's not all that common to get contacted ON the weekend. And for some reason, I don't tend to get too many contacts on fridays either. But i often work on weekends. I am single and don't have kids, so if i work on a weekend, I can have my 'weekend' on a monday! If I do get a workless weekend, I can't complain, but I don't turn down anything that might go through a weekend. I can always make some time... See more
