I started using them as a reminder: several times in the past, I got an angry message from customers to whom I had not replied nor sent the job they had asked for while I was away... They had just forgotten I had warned them that I would be away from x to y.

I can never find the space in my schedule to get away.

When I've taken vacations in the past, I have notified my main clients by e-mail, but I avoid those automatic messages. For a translator, I don't think they're good for business. My own experience is that when I get one I go somewhere else to solve the problem. I mentally write the person off.

When clients offer a job, they usually give it to the first qualified person who responds - they don't wait for me - they move on. That's the way the business works. However, if I TELL them I'm away, they might unconsciously think I won't be available for a while.

I tend to get tied up with large projects from clients I know well - and they will know when I'm returning. I sdon't worry about losing the little ones.

Eight years here.

Notification + BlackBerry + Laptop Sep 25, 2009

I do notify them, I also set up an autoresponder. But I have a few customers with regular assignments (newsletters, magazines) who cannot change their apparition schedule because I am on holiday. However, I cannot change my holidays because of school holidays and my husband's tight schedule. Therefore, I always take my BlackBerry to check for mails and use the next available internet cafe or hotspot to download and upload files. I must admit that it is quite nice to work with my feet in the sand... See more

But I don't accept any new or rush jobs while on holiday.

I do the same Sep 25, 2009

Like Sophie, I send an e-mail to my regular clients before I go away and set up my e-mail account to send an automatic notification that I'm not available.
I'm like Sophie and Catherine, too.
Obviously, if I am only going away for a few days I don't tend to say anything and depending on the job and the urgency which I receive on my Blackberry, I´ll do it from where I am. However, holidays are holidays and that has to be respected!
