I too suffered badly from RSI, a combination of mouse and keyboard work and tennis/gardening elbow, which left me in agony after a day's work a couple of years ago. I tried homeopathic remedies and acupuncture, which worked in the short term, but the problem always returned when I started work again. I changed my work layout, altering the keyboard and mouse to ergonomic models, changed the monitor height, bought a new chair and footrest, but all to limited effect. I changed my work layout, altering the keyboard and mouse to ergonomic models, changed the monitor height, bought a new chair and footrest, but all to limited effect. Finally, I decided to invest in Dragon and have to say it's probably been the best £50 I've ever spent - not only has it really helped my RSI (not completely gone as I still play tennis and badminton and can't resist digging....), it's also improved my productivity no end.
I used to dictate when I worked in-house many moons ago, so I didn't have any problem translating out loud - in fact I think it often flows better when I'm not hampered by my slow typing skills! Dragon certainly didn't take long to train - half an hour and I was off, although you obviously build up technical terminology as you go along.
I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's struggling with RSI. I use it in conjunction with Wordfast, which works fine - although I do use keyboard shortcuts for the commands rather than dictating them as it's quicker. ▲ Collapse | | |
I must be the exception to the rule.... after more than 30 years in translating, of which 19 in front of the computer, I've never had any wrist or back problems.
I do have swollen feet at the moment, and it would be better not to spend the day sitting here, but that's probably due to tramping round Florence on the first hot weekend of the season! | | | RSI - yes, a nasty case | May 20, 2009 |
I have had a nasty and persistent case of RSI since February, more muscular than tendons according to the docs, and also involving cramping of my left hand. I started off wearing a wrist brace on my left arm, but that simply wasn't enough, and my right hand also started to show symptoms. My GP had always wanted to stick needles into me, so I gave acupuncture a go together with intensive physiotherapy. I also dug out and installed DNS Preferred which I had purchased last year. I used to dictate as an employed translator so that's not a problem. The treatment has worked well but, as my physiotherapist tells me: Just because its stopped hurting, that doesn't mean it's better (this while kneading a particularly painful spot.....). The RSI didn't come overnight and it will not disappear overnight either. I think one simply has to be paitent...................Oh, and playing golf regularly might not help particularly. But I do play with wrist bandages at the mo. ▲ Collapse | | | I had it just once... | May 20, 2009 |
...when I had to spend a month away from the big civilization, typing on a really bad keyboard.
I found good and simple exercises here;
