i01-Interpreting Issues for the 21st Century
Course summary
Description This 3-hour workshop will explore the different career paths for individuals in the language industry, specially in the language interpreting environment. Career paths include the traditional of face-to-face consecutive, simultaneous or whispering modes, as well as the new modalities of phone and remote video interpreting. Discussions will also describe the dual role many interpreters have in the translation and localization industry and the new areas that merge text and speech, such as those in live chatrooms, live captioning, sight translation, quick email turnover, multilingual subtitling, bilingual voice-over, and many others born of the digital revolution. This workshop will study the core processes used by interpreters, as well as the interaction with language service providers, government agencies, private professional organizations, and training and accreditation bodies. Since most professionals in the language industry are freelancers, this workshop will also study some of the essential aspects of running your own business.
