I had the idea to this poll after a discussion with my sister, who was complaining that she was pursuing too many goals in life, which made her unable to focus on any one goal in particular.
That made me think about my goals in life, and I was shocked to find that I don't really have any. Or rather, that my only goal in life is to protect what I have now (mainly, the health and wellbeing of my family), that is, to keep the status quo. I am so anxious that I'm unable to think of any other ... See more I had the idea to this poll after a discussion with my sister, who was complaining that she was pursuing too many goals in life, which made her unable to focus on any one goal in particular.
That made me think about my goals in life, and I was shocked to find that I don't really have any. Or rather, that my only goal in life is to protect what I have now (mainly, the health and wellbeing of my family), that is, to keep the status quo. I am so anxious that I'm unable to think of any other goal.
So I was wondering how many of us actually had that sense of purpose. I think the healthiest thing would be to have one - or two or three - specific goals which one would be working towards, at any point in life. ▲ Collapse

And I don't really have any others. I agree in principle that it's a good idea to have a couple of goals, but OTOH if you're content with your lot, is it really necessary?
(My goal was to buy a little old warehouse in the heart of Lazio and turn it into a house - i.e. pay someone else to. It's finished, it's lovely, it cost about twice as much as planned and has probably taken about 10 years off my life and no way would I ever... See more And I don't really have any others. ...I just have a lot of plans for the future, but I live life one day at a time.
Plans include refurbishing the house, taking a month or two off to visit the USA with my family (RV), to buy myself a brand new car one day in stead of the rustmobiles I've been driving so far, and to find time to listen to some really interesting CD's I bought ages ago but still haven't played.

Now the question is, beeing on the wrong side of the 50's, what's left?
A little bit pessimistic, but I hope I'll try to figure new ones... and achieve them as well!

Since I am also on the wrong side of 50 (??), I have achieved most of the goals I set myself early in life.
That does not stop me from having new ones. I still have plans and dreams, but also a sense of contentment, happiness in what I have and satisfaction in living one day at a time.
That means - I do not strive towards my goals with quite the same determination I did 25 years ago, but maybe that is just as well

My main goals and their status:
1. Being a good translator: a full-time translator since 1996, but feel that I have a lot to learn.
2. Being a good family man: happily married, two beautiful children, but feel trying to be a good translator is keeping me from being a good family man.
3. Being a good drummer: the two goals above require time, and drumming must be in pause for now.
4. Being a good farmer: luckily my trees don't require much time now, bu... See more My main goals and their status:

I still have some minor goals, but the biggest, main one was achieved. Now I can enjoy life and every day of it

Once dreams are realised ... they're no longer dreams ...
I think you'll find that after a few years you want another goal or dream.

professional, affective, creative, etc.
Another thing is that your family - the part you're most protective of - may not be so central to your life 10 or 20 years on, which is why you-yourself needs also to be taken care of. It also prepares you for the day when that focus no longer exists in your life.

My grandfather used to say "You die when you dream no more, and you are alive until you have something new to learn, every single day, from your dreams".
Every new goal brings within itself a new dream, because living means changing, growing, keeping on dreaming. I have reached many of my goals, therefore I have new bases to start dreaming something new. This does not mean at all that I want to HAVE or to DO something new, or something MORE; it just (just? ... A wonderful dream, even when life is hard (and at the moment my life IS hard, with my husband's health problems, our house to be deeply restored, money shortage and so on). I hope I will have always several dreams, several goals, many things to learn. Every single day, a day at the time. ▲ Collapse

...I'm discovering that what people are calling "the wrong side of 50" is actually starting to feel like "the RIGHT side of 50"!!
As for goals, I'm one of the "one day at a time" group. If anything, my main goal has always been to have enough money to eat and travel. Other than that, I'm just trying to enjoy the ride. Granted, some days it is easier than others!

It was the next poster who wrote about the wrong (?) side of 50.
I don't feel that there is anything wrong with me or my age
or anyone else's for that matter, unless one is looking back on a wasted life, I suppose.
