Nights are gaming time

Half-nights (up to 2 or 3 a.m.) certainly. Perhaps two or three times per month. but never ***all*** night.

Working during the whole night is one of the worst things that could happen to me! Really, the next day if I don’t have to work I try to sleep two o three hours but it’s impossible so I feel exhausted the whole day! Whenever I have a lot of work to do I would rather have a nap during the night than staying the whole night working!

I stayed up all night just last week. It's not something that I like doing or that should be done, but I got caught up with some other things during the week that I couldn't put off (not work related) and in the end I had to cram in the translation by staying up all night. The "fun" part is that the following morning my computer started playing up and although I finished the translation around 11 or 12, I couldn't get it sent until 3 pm. Having said this, it might happen to me again, but it's not something I look forward to and not something I would encourage in others. Your translations lose quality, and furthermore, we are PEOPLE, not machines, and if some people do this due to bad planning or due to slave-driving outsourcers, they should stop, because as translators we also have to know when to demand minimum working conditions, and obviously we have to provide a minimum quality.
So hope the rest of you are better planners and/or don't get caught up in situations like I did, so you can better enjoy your time and keep your evenings/nights to yourselves. ▲ Collapse

I generally get up at around 4-5 am to work, but that's by choice.
Taking a good forty minutes for breakfast/showering and an hour break at lunch time, I can comfortably finish by around 4 p.m.
It's long enough spent working - especially in this heat.
I went through a stage where I was spending countless hours in front of the PC, and having to do all-nighters from time to time.

However, after examining why and then blocking a totally abusive "colleague" from Skype - who ran countless questions past me for months under the guise of being a buddy who could "one day" return the favour - I've cut down dramatically on wasted time and am far better off for it.
If all-nighters start to become a regular thing, it's time to identify the reasons why and take measures to manage your time better/change your priorities.

I can not function properly at night. I need to go to sleep at midnight in order to be able to work well during the next day since 6 am or so.
In fact, if I worked all day long, I cannot translate beyond 8 pm.
My wife, on the other side, works in the opposite way.
She gets up late and works until 3-4 am of whatever needed.

I interpreted this as "marathon sessions". I cannot stay up all night, especially day after day, and I need my sleep. After a certain hour at night my energy starts to wane and there is no use staying at it.
What I actually do is get up at the crack of dawn and keep on working until 10-11 PM then call it quits. I have done it for weeks at a time, and an enormous amount of work gets done.
Then the compensation for that is being able to rest easy for quite a while, go on ... See more I interpreted this as "marathon sessions". I'm really concerned about the 3.6% of respondents who stay up all night >20 times a month, and another 3.6% who stay up 11-20 times a month. In the case of the first group, that means they are working all night every single weekday. Unless they have deliberately chosen a bush-baby existence, working at night and sleeping all day, it can't be good for them or the quality of their translations.

I've only pulled one all-nighter this year and had to work until 5am on one occassion.
The all-nighter happened because I had an unexpected medical problem and "lost" 2 whole days on different procedures & doctor's appointments, which set me behind on a large project.
The other (until 5am) happened because I made the huge mistake of accepting a small job on a subject I know little about and had to balance that with a large project on a subject I'm familir with. Some of them were during a month when I was in Spain and was doing work for a client in California. The rest were jobs done at home (near Philadelphia) for clients in Europe who needed things delivered by 6 or 7 a.m. my time.
In each case, I then went right to bed and slept about 7 hours. I'm kind of a night owl to begin with, but I wouldn't want to make a habit of this.

In some cases, I had to work till 8 am. I was exhausted and, to make things worse, I could sleep only 3 or 4 hours because noise was everywhere. I prefer to get up early (6 am) because my mind is free of ideas, in other words, it is empty and it really helps me to study and work.

Unfortunately and when deadline is only a few hours away, I have to stay up all night...I hate to do it because next day I feel exhausted.... I´m not used to do it, but if I have to do it, then I do it....
