I updated my website and paid my Proz membership. As my printer/scanner/copier has started quite recently to do a strange grinding noise I think this will be my next “investment”. Other than that I’m good…

I need to replace my laptop and upgrade my translation software, but I have been putting off the expenditure to see whether there is still a market for translation into UK English after Brexit. At the moment I am reluctant to spend money either work-related or in my personal life due to the uncertainty. I really can't understand the madness of politics in my country at the moment!

Indemnity insurance package - again, not a lot, but I will drop it when I really give up translating.
A two-day powwow, which was really brilliant, but with travel and meals, staying overnight etc. did cost a little.
Travel to two otherwise free translator and language events. (One in London was combined with holiday, so the separate costs were minimal.)

A new desktop computer, instead of just continuing with my laptop alone when the old one broke down.

I bought a new desktop with a 27" screen and also a MS Surface Go (small laptop), plus a couple of keyboards and mice. Also a new backup drive, a fancy new hub, and an external DVD reader/writer. I didn't have a laptop before and my main computer was failing fast.

Does paying to get a PC or laptop fixed count? I might have done that, or at least spent some time and gas money taking my colleague's PC to the guy...
I probably paid a subscription to some software provider or other as well. I suppose my monthly internet bill is mainly a work-related "investment" too...

I initially thought your Brexit comment was just a joke, but now I'm not so sure. I don't really see how the UK being in or out of the EU will have any great effect on the demand for UK English translation. I suppose in a worst-case scenario we could learn US English, I mean how hard can it be?

I always keep my equipment up-to-date and nothing is more than 4 years old.
Why bother with old stuff when the investment can be deducted in tax?

Regrettably, I am serious. I have been following the Brexit proceedings and the various comments made in online forums with great concern and unfortunately there is a segment of the UK population that is so xenophobic that they have been expressing views to the effect that they don't even want tourists to visit the UK any more. The mood tone they are creating is so negative that in the event they get their way and we go for a no-deal Brexit it (or a hard Brexit along the lines advocated by Theresa May), it is conceivable that foreigners would no longer wish to trade with the UK. In that event, there would be little or no demand for translation into UK English (at least in my language pairs).

Not, it is not conceivable. The same xenophobic minority didn't stop them trading with us before Brexit, and won't after. Britain trades with all kinds of obnoxious regimes and will always do so, as will all other countries. There will still be just as much trade and translation after Brexit. Relax.

I was at the low en of expenditures this past year (no major equipment acquired), but still racked up 8-900 dollars in memberships, dictionaries, cartridges, paper, new laptop battery, a fan and a space heater for my study.
Next year I'll triple that since I need a new computer.
However is it possible to spend nothing?

Bear in mind that some (and arguably most) of what you list are not investments but expenses!
Nobody needs to buy a new PC and printer (our main investments) every year!
