It has happened, more than once or twice... | Nov 17, 2018 |
But not fairly often, though just by coincidence I’m translating a GCE certificate for a niece.

More than once or twice but not too often.
Some have offered to pay (I refused). It's usually either something small and easy or just asking for advice, I don't consider it as a service. I have also said no on a few occasions when I knew it would take too much time and effort.
Once in a while. Small stuff, not thousands of words.

I have actually been quite lucky in that sense, or else my family and my friends are very reasonable people. I've had quite a few jobs ordered by family members and friends, always with a request for a quote and payments without much "crying".

As a sworn translator, I am often asked to translate documents for friends or friends' children, and it is a pleasure to help whenever I can.

Friend/Colleague Who Did Pay Me | Nov 17, 2018 |
A former friend/colleague of mine once asked me to translate some sentences into Spanish so he could include them in a short story he was writing.
I suppose it was because he always referred to me as a "professional translator" (after listening to me read my work on multiple occasions) when he introduced me to other writers that he didn't think twice about paying me my minimum charge, and was the first to bring up the issue, when he asked for my services.

... but more often they ask me to accept their parcels or open the door to their AirBnB guests. Every neighbour loves a work-from-home translator.
