I need them all, especially the coffee, but can do without a cell phone. | | | Toni Faisal Indonesia Local time: 15:10 inglés al indonesio + ... no word translated without kind of rock songs =D | Jul 30, 2017 |
actually, I can work without those things, but I will work with my Tados which I installed in my PC and in my laptop if necessary. But, the most I love when working is by listening music, especially rock or metal. | | | "Other" (Internet) | Jul 30, 2017 |
I replied TM:s, but have actually changed my mind. If someone would take away my internet that would be the total disaster. I would miss my TM:s and I would miss some other things moderately, but if someone were to take my internet that would make my work so hard that I don´t think it would be profitable anymore. I am paying for three different internet connections (from three different providers) to ensure that I NEVER run out of internet connection. ▲ Collapse

Morning coffee | Jul 30, 2017 |
When I started translating some 40 years ago there were no computers, no printers, no Internet, no CATs or TMs, no cell phones, no dictation software, no ergonomic chairs... so I could probably work without all those things, but I can’t start working without my morning coffee.

Internet is pretty much indispensable nowadays. However, the two on the list I most identify with are music (I usually have BBC 6 music on in the background) and dictation software, which I've got very accustomed to using most of the time.
I could translate with pencil and paper, nothing else, however the overall productivity of this process (my handwriting is ghastly) would be a very small fraction of what it is now. That's how I did it in the 70s, though I used a Parker 51, that needed no sharpening, just refueling with ink less often.
I'm surprised no-one has said "computer".

If my computer is working and there's electric power, that's 80% of what I really need to work.
If the internet connection is working, then we're up to 90%.
The rest is a set of accessories that do help a lot, but being "sine que non" inputs is way beyond their status. | | | Angus Stewart Reino Unido Local time: 08:10 francés al inglés + ...
I could not work without my TMs. They are extremely useful to me in leveraging previous translation and making my work more efficient. At the other end the scale, I don't have a cell phone and don't understand what use it could possibly serve.
The chair makes it possible to remain seated for long periods of time.

Excellent observation Elizabeth! I also find that a desk is the best piece of equipment for optimising our sitting activity, carried out at said computer. I know there are also standing desks available, which would sadly make your suggestion redundant. Others may disagree with me of course.

Standing would make my back ache, I'm afraid. It would also interfere with my habit of falling asleep (or should I say having power naps ) in front of the computer. | | | Coffee and cell phone | Jul 30, 2017 |
As long as there is coffee, I won't need bail money. | | | Mario Freitas Brasil Local time: 05:10 Miembro 2014 inglés al portugués + ... C'mon my firends! Really? | Jul 31, 2017 |
If you are working in a big project, due tomorrow, and your chair breaks or your TM is corrupted, or the internet is out... will you actually not be able to work? Will younot deliver the job? I CAN NOT is a lot different than "I wouldn't like to" or "I wouldn't want to".
P.S. Of course, in the PC and internet case, I'm talking about temporary outages.
