But I wanted to make sure it didn't make any difference to me and my business. Since it brought less business than it cost, I didn't renew. I suppose these things are only as helpful as the time you're prepared to spend on them and how active you are/visible you make yourself. Does this include proz? I let my membership lapse this year... but might sign up again at some point. Right now I'm too busy to do anything except actually work...

Reluctantly, I dropped the Union of Communication and Language Professionals Denmark when I reached retiring age, as it is combined with a trade union, and the subscription is far too expensive compared with the rights and benefits for those above the age limit. As long as I am working, I plan to continue with the CIoL and if possible retain my Chartered Linguist status.

IAPTI I looked into joining ATA but I am only interested in this membership if I could be tested and certified by them, which is not an available option for my language combination yet. IAPTI seemed like the second best choice to me. The free webinars are sometimes interesting and I have gained a new client through them during the first three months. The reasonable membership fees have been earned back several times already.

I used to be very active in ATA, but that was a long time ago. I really don't have time for it in my schedule.

ITI and CIoL... I wouldn't call ProZ a "professional association"...

Proz is a commercial website open to any and all. Lots of products and services for sale and enticements for people to pay (extra) to get perks. Imo, there is nothing association-like about it.

I think that a high degree of repetition and irrelevance will be inevitable as long as this site continues to post a separate "poll question" each and every day. Personally, I would like to know why the person who suggested today's question has done so, and what he or she hoped to learn from the responses....

I'm also thinking of joining the ESTS (European Society for Translation Studies) as one of my academic colleagues (she's a professor at Concordia University) recommended it. I'm with Muriel about the ATA. I let my membership lapse in 2015 or 2016.

What might possibly be vaguely interesting is whether these repeated polls always get the same answers. Like, maybe more people belong or admit to belonging to the ATA on Wednesdays than on Thursdays, thus revealing some hitherto undiscovered quirk of the translator's psyche. PS I belong to none, although I am considering joining the FFS or possibly the WTF or JK.
