I started interpreting in Spanish four days before turning 20 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and did some ASL interpreting before that. I translated a little in Argentina, but didn't really do anything serious until two years later.

I started translating in Latvia (the real beginning) after my first child Peter was born as I was in need to earn some money. He was born with a congenital hydrocephalia - thanks God not a severe but a middle level case only but he wasnot able to roll or move and his medication required a lot of money. (However, his father left and did not care what will happen in the future. I was almost 2800 km away from my country and as I am a countrygirl, in a small town it considered shameful to have a bab... (However, his father left and did not care what will happen in the future. I was almost 2800 km away from my country and as I am a countrygirl, in a small town it considered shameful to have a baby but not a husband on your side, nevertheless is it your fault or not. So I could not count on my mother's support.)
I was desperately search any work and get some small translations and it turned to a regular work a year later. Si the real beginning was somewhere in 1991... On the last course in 1992-93 I regularly worked for a forestry trading company - thanks God and to its owner - who had contacts with Hungary and was in need of a person who speaks Russian and Latvian and Hungarian, and is able to translate some trade documentation, and talking to the clients on the phone. It was a very valuable experience in a small but really multicultural evironment. That time my baby was just a 2 years old and I was 23 years old.
From the mirror of the past its seems so far... Considering Latvia for my second homeland, I still hold the honourable Mr. Bahmanis and the Ionov and Cimanskis family in my prayers. I do not know how we would survive without their support and daily encouragement.
Peter was almost 2 years when he improved a sing of healing bit it was a long way until he was cured. Although mentally he is absolutely healthy, the congenital damage left some manual skills and a sensitivity of balance damaged but today he is an IT specialist and in this year he turns 25.

I was in my late 30's when I started translating full time, after freelancing part-time for a good couple of years. I landed an in-house job through an open competition. At first, we were circa 30,000. After a preselection based on multiple choice tests we were reduced to 2,000. This was followed by translation tests and an interview. I was lucky enough to be among the chosen few. The whole procedure took one year. I worked there for 20 years and retired 6 years ago. I would probably never have ... When I started out, I was on the brink of turning 20. That was back in...the last millennium when I beca,e an in-house translator with the US Forces here in Germany.

It is always amazing and inspiring how people, when in difficult situations, fight and find a solution to their problems! Stories like this make me think how lucky I am and stop complaining about how my beginning as freelancer is complicated with 2 toddlers..
I am translating for around 7 years, but the first 6 were part time (that is, from time to time), additional to my attorney-at-law career.
