In fact Proz.com is the most effective, and I spend most time on it. However, I do keep an eye on the CIoL as discussed yesterday, and I am working on my LinkedIn profile.

There is also general networking among colleagues, which does not produce a large stream of work, but what comes is usually interesting and reasonably paid.

My own website ( www.translatinghebrew.com ), LinkedIn - although I can't honestly say I "use" this, it's there but...it's just there, I rarely log in. And obviously I'm here.

I did briefly consider another similar portal to this, but I didn't like the interface, maybe I was too used to ProZ's. At some point this year I also intend on joining a "professional" organization/association.

However, despite all this I have found the "lo-tech" approach to be more fruitful and "word-of-mouth" has been more effective in promoting my "business".

- my website
- my LinkedIn profile
- my ProZ profile
- myTwitter account

I also have profiles on the CIOL and IAPTI directories.

LinkedIn appears in search results on top of ProZ, so if you don't have a profile on LinkedIn you're missing out. However, there are quite a few colleagues also using Pinterest, Facebook and a million other platforms and frankly I don't know how they keep it up.

You get more results with a focused approach, IMO.<

Anyway, thank you all for your input so far!

I can't remember exactly when I suggested this one but I think I did so to get some discussion going on the Proz and cons (pun intended) of each mode of self-promotion and to get an idea of the "right" or "ideal" mix even though we each have our own individual needs and requirements.

Interesting to note that

- with just over 500 votes so far, over a 1/3 of pollsters are solely dependent on this site, and
- this poll is following hot on the heels of yesterday's "Has being a member of a translators' organization helped you attract more clients?"

Food for thought. Hmmm

AFAIK I'm not really promoting my "business". I'd also like to remove my details from LinkedIn and stop its intrusive emails and unsolicited approaches from people I've never heard of.

PS: I have now closed my LinkedIn account. Don't worry, Ron and Gary, you both still have my details if you need to get in touch!

At least it sounds less grubby and agenda-driven.

Most of my jobs I get via Jan 8, 2013

ProZ.com and TranslatorsCafé.com and potential clients probably check out my website, too.

LinkedIn doesn't seem to yield any business - I like to keep Facebook for friends and personal communicatios, and I don't 'tweet'.

As an association officer I was yanked into the social networks. LinkedIn was kind of effective, but FB resulted in a lot of unsolicited spam.
