Stayed the same, how do you manage that? Especially with electric being raised by 15% every year, property prices, etc...

Exactly. And our politicians are also considering a V. A. T. raise this year.
Unless you're completely autarchic, there's no way to keep the costs at the same level, let alone decrease them.

yes, a lot.
Gas, electricity, railroads, highways, insurance. And other extra costs!

My God. A disaster...

Please tell me where in the world overheads have ever decreased. I would be interested to study the reasons behind such a phenomenon.

In my experience, the cost of Internet access (per mB) is going down worldwide. So is the cost of hardware. I keep reading on other forum postings about "barriers to entry" crumbling.

Decreased! Jan 2, 2013

The main reason behind such a phenomenon: I moved my office to my home... No more double bills!

Much, much lower! Jan 2, 2013

Broadband prices are coming down all the time and are a fraction of what it used to cost to send files abroad by modem

Email means no phone bill

Electricity - we use less and less due to more energy-efficient hardware and lighting (plus we have solar panels)

Heating - we grow our own wood (admittedly not an option for all translators!)

Accountancy - the same (partly because everything is computerised instead of on paper)

Paper - big screens mean we print a lot less

Stamps - forgotten what they are

Fax paper - so 20th century

What else is there?

increased over all Jan 2, 2013

My post, phone and internet costs have decreased, all other overheads have increased, so increased over all

Definitely decreased! Jan 2, 2013

So much so that I find it hard to justify the most modest of expenses.

'Phone and Broadband charges very low, loads of dictionaries online for free, no postage, no faxes, no paper and very little printing!

I'm seriously thinking of offering the Inland Revenue a rebate. Just joking...

Although some expenses like broadband/telephone bills/mobile and so on have remained steady, other costs as rent, electricity, gas, water have increased a lot.
Also I have to take into account that every year taxes are higher than the year before, so what actually remains in my pocket is less than the year before.

But then, I upgraded to a smart phone.

Otherwise, professional memberships remain stable.
Gas and electricity remain stable or only fractionally higher.
Internet access/email costs have decreased slightly.

It helps to live in a fly-over state.

I do my bookkeeping myself, hardware is so much cheaper every year, no land-line phone anymore, no fax anymore.
