Usually, not very often. Lately, very often. I usually try to pass any extra work on to colleagues, but since Easter everyone I know around here has had to refuse some work, so I haven't been able to channel everything that has come in. It would help if 90% of clients weren't all in such a desperate hurry, but don't get me started on that one...
If I am busy I try to negotiate another deadline and in general my clients are willing to wait, within reason... Hope you all have a nice week-end!

Sometimes it seems like the more work I have, the more likely it is that I'll have to turn down some big, amazing project!

Indeed, being busy - not available for other reason - seems to draw work like a magnet. And some of the project I had to turn down were just what I've been looking for.

I turn down work nearly every week, and sometimes more than one job in a day, but it's not always because I'm fully booked with translation work. Sometimes I'm busy with something else (usually music work) or I just need a day off. Also I'll turn down jobs that I feel are outside my areas of knowledge or are just too excruciatingly boring or complicated (unless I really need the money).

Mainly because I'm already fully booked and too many jobs are described as desperately urgent. I try to negotiate a longer deadline but these days that often isn't possible. I also try to recommend a trusted colleague, but they too are often busy. Are these jobs really so urgent? Who knows? It's annoying, but seems inevitable. Jenny
I don't push myself. I tend to get large jobs, and I keep myself budgeted at 2,000 words a day. That means that I am turning down jobs almost every day, Monday through Friday. Usually people have crazy deadlines, but if I'm working on a large job, it would be impossible for them to wait, anyway. If I try to "sandwich" them in, I get behind on the big job, so it doesn't pay.
