To make more and work less BECAUSE I have more/higher paying clients AND THAT WOULD MEAN I AM well-recognized in the industry SO, AS A CONSEQUENCE ONE DAY I COULD have my own agency/a bigger agency AND THAT WOULD MEAN THAT I have more time to spend on other things AND WHY NOT? IF I COULD HAVE NO AGENCY I WOULD LIKE
To travel/relocate

To just do the work I enjoy Dec 14, 2009

I'd like to have the luxury of turning down tedious jobs (like the 70 pages of graphic legends that I'm doing right now).

No dreams here Dec 14, 2009

I have already met my professional objectives, so my only desire is to carry on as long as possible being semi-retired and doing the work I love at a pace that is comfortable and on my own terms. And I do wish I could stop dreaming about doing translations, that is for when I'm awake.

But for the rest of you, many who are much younger than I am, you should have dreams.

If you are respected and have a good reputation in the industry, the rest is sure to follow.

... because I'm a realist.
I'd be quite happy simply for the economic situation to get back to roughly how it was in 2008 and have another good year instead of the slow slog that 2009 has turned out to be.
I do find it baffling that most posters seem to think that running an agency involves doing less work than translating. In my experience, that only applies to the rubbish (i. e. exploitative, lazy, secretive, reactive, money-grabbing, etc) ones.

WOW! Dec 14, 2009

So 7% of translators are fed up of being translators and want to open an agency? I'm impressed.

I'd like to have more time to make something else Dec 14, 2009

I started a little sewing business and sold some of my creations already, but my main source of income is translation, so I accept whenever I get a contract offer. But when I take a break, I sew.

Translating a book... Dec 14, 2009

Not a special or intellectual book, not at all. A simple love, historical, psychological story or anything else, but a book intended to give the pleasure of reading to people. That is my principal dream as a translator.

In my personal life, I am old enough to have made some of my dreams come true and I hope it is not finished.

Clarification Dec 15, 2009

I don't see how "To have more/higher paying clients" can not lead to "To make more and work less," or how the latter cannot require the former. Unless you switch to another profession or industry, that is.
