There seems to be something wrong with the poll.
In any case, my clients give me a deadline, and I don't question it.
If I can 't meet the deadline, I decline the job.
I give my clients a rate. That's not usually negotiable, either.
If they don't want to pay my rate, I decline the job.

As I basically work for the same customers, they know my rates.
Deadlines are agreed on according to my availability. They suggest, I accept or decline.

... and in any case, it's a poorly worded poll. I'd prefer to separate deadline and rate.

How it usually works for me is that the client says when the translation is needed, I say when I can do it, and we negotiate if the dates don't match. Client asks me my rate, I state my rate, and we negotiate if required.

Where is "we negotiate"? Feb 2, 2009

With new clients I always go through a back-and-forth negotiation process. With old clients, we always negotiate the deadline, and sometimes I raise my rate if they have the flexibility to respond. (The United Nations agencies have fixed rates.)

I agree with Angela that deadline and pay are separate issues.
