This phrase appears is many journalistic articles and I am unsure of the correct English equivalent. "In spite of/Despite the previous point" sounds very unnatural to me so I'm looking for other options.

Hi Stacey,

I think you'll often find that whereas in Spanish they prefer to start a paragraph with "a pesar de lo anterior" o "pese a lo anterior", the equivalent in an English article would often be a simple "However", and not necessarily in first position.

A Spanisb text would have, e.g.

"A pesar de lo anterior, podemos afirmar que...."

I think a decent English equivalent could well be:

"We can, however, state that ,,,,,"

i.e. I'd think of it more as a context than 4 words.

Coincido  Lucy Phillips: Good point - it's the idea that needs translating and in a journalistic context style can be almost as important as content. You don't translate phrase for phrase for phrase always.
