As far as I know, this is NOT a folk tale but is actually a song (of the "son" style) which comes from the Mexican state of Veracruz.

Una de as colecciones más completas de Sones Jarochos. Interpretadas por dos de los conjuntos que dieron más auge a este tipo de Música, los conjuntos Tlalixcoyan y Medellin. Este disco contiene Sones Jarochos aptos para precentaciones y son de gran calidad interpretativa.

It seems that the story the song tells has been adapted to a children's book. In a sense, "El pájaro Cu" is a folk tale -- after all, it's a narrative song.

There was once a meeting of all the birds of the world. Being reunited, first that they needed was the mail,so that it took to them and to brought messages to them of another part. They thought that to which it would be good for choosing to it was the mail. Soon, tecolote said that it was good the Cú bird, but soon saw it that was very bad dressed.

Then, tecolote said:

- Because we are giving a feather to him each one of us, so that to dress himself of many colors and that is seen very distinguished.

All accepted. They took off a feather and they gave it.

The Cú bird went to other places to take messages. It was seen that he was very beautiful, with feathers of different colors thought that if returned, would take off , and better it said:

- I no longer will return. I never will return with them, so that they do not clear my dress to me.

And he never returned.

Then, the other birds, seeing that no longer it returned, looked for tecolote and they said to him that they were going it to kill him, because it did not return the Cú bird, nor returned with the messages. Tecolote also fled. For that reason, tecolote never leaves by day, so that they are not going it to kill the other birds.

Hubo una vez una reunión de todos los pájaros del mundo. Ya estando reunidos, lo primero que les hacía falta era el correo, para que les llevara y les trajera mensajes de otra parte. Pensaron que a cuál sería bueno escoger para que fuera el correo. Luego, el tecolote dijo que era bueno que fuera el pájaro Cú, pero luego lo vieron que estaba muy mal vestido.

Entonces, el tecolote dijo:

- Pues vamos regalándole una pluma cada uno de nosotros, para que se vista de muchos colores y ue se vea muy distinguido.

Todos aceptaron. Se quitaron una pluma y se la regalaron.

El pájaro Cú se fue a otros lugares de llevar mensajes. Se vio que estaba muy hermoso, con plumas de distintos colores. pensó que si volvía, se las quitarían, y mejor dijo:

- Yo ya no volveré. Yo nunca volveré con ellos, para que no me quiten mi vestido.

Y nunca volvió.

Entonces, los demás pájaros, viendo que ya no volvió, buscaron al tecolote y le dijeron que lo iban a matar a él, porque no volvía el pájaro Cú, ni regresaba con los mensajes. El tecolote también huyó. Por eso, el tecolote nunca sale de día, para que no lo vayan a matar los demás pájaros.

This legend is used in one "song" (son) of the traditional music from Veracruz called 'Son Jarocho' which is the product of the civilizing encounter between the three roots:The Indigenous(nahuas,zoques,popolucas and chinantecos),Spanish (mostly from Andalucia) and the black (Bantu) peoples from Africa.
The lyrics of the son called El Pájaro Cú depends of the region and the ¨soneros¨or¨jaraneros¨(the musicians of the Son Jarocho).
This one refers to the folktale:
The Cú Bird in the mount
alone was lamented,
one complained to his fortune;
to see itself without a feather
nor it already sang.

The Lechuza in one night
it heard a sad moan,
and seated in ocote
it said to him to his Tecolote:

- It reunites the birds of the wind.


The Tecolote, by old,
it acted with rectitude
and it requested one to them by one
that they gave a feather him
to the poor Cú Bird.

All the birds of the wind
between gardens and flowers
they were united one by one
giving a feather to him
of different colors.

They said to the Tecolote,

El Tecolote, por viejo,
obraba con rectitud
y les pedía una por una
que le dieran una pluma
al pobre Pájaro Cú.

Todas las aves del viento
entre jardines y flores
se unieron una por una
regalándole una pluma
de diferentes colores.

Dijéronle al Tecolote,
en su precioso gorjear:

-Tú vas a ser el fiador,
no vaya a ser un traidor
cuando comience a volar.

Luego que se vio vestido
para el espacio voló
y al Tecolote, su amigo,
lo dejó comprometido
con la firma que prestó.

Por eso los tecolotes
cantando: ¡Ticú-ticú!
volando de rama en rama
de noche, afligidos llaman
al pobre Pájaro Cú.

Por eso los tecolotes
de día no pueden ver,
pues todas las avecitas
con el pico y sus alitas
se los quisieran comer.

EL Pájaro Cú voló
para otras tierras mejores,
les decía a los pajaritos:

-De todos mis hermanitos
me vestí de mil colores.
Toditas las tortolitas
cantaban con inquietud:

-Con cuidado, gavilanes,
vayan formando sus planes,
que ahí viene el Pájaro Cú.

Ya con ésta me despido
por las hojas de un pirú
me deben de dispensar
que ya les vine a cantar
versos del Pájaro Cú.

En aquel tiempo nos narra esta historia los pájaros poseían el don de hablar como las personas, entre todos ellos, el más feo y el más insignificante era el pájaro cu, este pájaro aburría a los demás con sus lamentos no podía resignarse, continuamente lloraba y se lamentaba en su suerte, pero sus amigos los demás pájaros le regalaron unas plumas de colores y él las recibió reposante de alegría, desde aquel día, el pájaro cu fue el más bello de todos.
