the stop-chorus; that consists in following the harmonic grid but playing only one agreement out of two or one agreement out of four.
--
The structure of the piece of impromptu jazz is often the following one:
Topic: it is often a standard, either taken again such as it was composed, or arranged by the musicians. It is often played in introduction and the end of the piece.
Solo, Chorus or impro: it is the moment when each musician improvises with his instrument, generally while basing himself on the structure of the harmonic grid, which is used to him as framework. During this impro, one follows the following methods more or less:
the other musicians of the group play the grid with mezza voce to let the soloist arise;
if there is a piano in the group, all the musicians can make silence, letting the piano simply accompany the soloist;
the group practises the stop-chorus; that consists in following the harmonic grid but playing only one agreement out of two or one agreement out of four.
One often regards the improvisation as made up to 50% of inspiration and 50% of theory; besides one should never put side the theory in the improvisation, that would be an error, this one can be only beneficial with the development of the creativity.
