plano de deslizamiento de una falta

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Geography Geography/geology

From a website featuring hiking routes in the foothills of the Sierra de Loja.

Thanks in advance.

I think you'll find falda means mountainside, and falla means fault.

falda de pie de monte that would be "falda de pie de monte" instead of "falta de pie de monte"

sliding surface resulting from a lack of ground in the base of the mountain

"el plano de deslizamiento de una falta de pie de monte" should be analyzed together. The "plano de deslizamiento" is the "sliding surface", referring to the plan in which the terrain is sliding. This sliding is due to a "falta de pie de monte", or "lack of bottom in the mountain". The mountain lacks ground in its base, and thus the terrain tends to slide down.

slip plane of a fault (at the foot of the slope)

The slip plane is the dominant direction in which the rock formation slopes and along which movement will occur in case of failure at weak points.
The usual term in Spanish I think is falla, I don't know if falta is meant to refer to a more local phenomena. In any case in English fault covers everything from tectonic faults in the Earth's crust right down to local cracking and fragmentation causes by lines of weakness.

I've got word from a geologist who specializes in rock slope failures (my dad!) who has this to say: " 'piedmont fault scarp' is self-contradictory, the fault is typically at the foot of the scarp, the piedmont is the flatland below the scarp."

Hope that helps...

agree liz askew : p.s. I am voting for your translation of "plano de deslizamiento de una falta ", which was the actual query.

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : "Pie de monte" is piedmont - a geological formation.

think this may be a false friend; I'm not sure pie de monte is being correctly used here, in fact.
