Hi, everybody! Could anyone help me with cheap accommodation in London/Oxford? I shall be attending two conferences there in September (8-14, 18-24). Thank you | | | A contradiction in terms? | Jun 5, 2010 |
Cheap accommodation in London sounds like a contradiction in terms. Will be interested to see what "cheap" looks like London-style.

I´m completely with writeaway on this one. Cheap and London don´t really go together.
But maybe you want to check gumtree.com for short-term flat shares. | | |
Yes,
Gumtree.com is the web site I used when in London back on 2004-2005..It was already expensive at that time, and today it is just outrageous, but that's the way it is..
Paris seems "cheap" compared to London and to New York.:-)
If you look for long-term stay and don't mind sharing with 2 guys from Syria, 2 girls from Guatemala, and 1 from Pakistan, well have fun..I experienced that and I could barely sleep sometimes (not mentioning coackroaches in the c... See more Yes,

Then I moved to a much better flat...Only 3 people living in there, which was "luxury" in London zone 2...:-)
Let me tell you: I was happy to get back to southern France after this long experience!
Oh and did I mentioned I got screwed by a placing agency called "London Job"? I paid a substantive fee to get a job (restaurants, hotels, others) and some place to sleep on arrival and ended up in a 8 people dorm flat the first night and no job interview at all or the employers didn't expect me!
Well, I was young at that time..I had to go through this

Try a youth hostel | Jun 5, 2010 |
Hi,
There are several youth hostels in London that offer reasonably priced accommodation - from £18.00 a night(ish). There'll be a small premium if you're not a member, but to be honest you'll probably cover the cost of a membership with the premium. They are all well located and they aren't like they used to be! I haven't stayed in a London one, but they are the best of the hostels and the ones I have stayed in outside London have all been very pleasant, clean and modern (you don't have to help with the chores any more!)
Hope that helps,

Never tried it but if you aren't fussy and are looking for cheap, it might be a good option. | | | Dan Bradley Reino Unido Local time: 23:05 japonés al inglés
I know friends who have had very good (and free) experiences with couch surfing in cities around the UK and Europe. I have also used the Hostelworld website for places in London several times and found rooms from about £10 a night for dorms. | | | LEXpert Estados Unidos Local time: 17:05 Miembro 2008 croata al inglés + ... University residence halls outside of term | Jun 5, 2010 |
Times may have changed in the intervening decade and half since I was a post-grad at LSE, but at the time many of the university residence halls operated at least partially as commercial/hostel-type accommodation during the summer. Some of the newer ones were quite nice as I recall. Not sure if that's still case but perhaps worth checking out.
