I make a point of leaving the house on my breaks. I go for walks, buy groceries and run other small errands. I can't stress how important it is for the freelance translator to get out and move about, even if it is just for a few minutes.

I find that even if I have a very important deadline to meet on a particular day, getting out improves rather than detracts from the productivity and efficiency.

near-daily gym visits Jul 17, 2007

I try to go to the gym every day and split up my working day with a good workout/15-20 minutes in the jacuzzi. I have also just bought myself a Nokia E61 with unlimited internet and mail so I don't have to worry about missing e-mails from clients when I'm out.

Law of motion Jul 17, 2007

Newton's first law of motion states that a body at rest tends to stay at rest while a body in motion tends to stay in motion. That’s how I would describe the difference between leaving home (for whatever reason, but especially work) and staying at home.

I leave the house everyday because I work as an in-house translator in a company 30 km from where I live. Personally, I’d love to stay home more often and not be bothered with the travel time and stress. I know from experience though, that when I have worked from home I tend to become a recluse. I’ll stay inside sometimes for 2 or 3 days, stop shaving and only change from one set of pyjamas to another instead of putting on street clothes
Going out to do what others do at home is a pain in the neck, but it keeps me from looking like Tom Hanks in Castaway and keeps my body in motion

I HAVE to go out, otherwise I will look like a fat chavvy scumbag with a tracksuit bottoms and a sweatshirt.

If I know I have to go out and see people, I will make more of an effort with my clothes and appearance. It is so easy to get lazy and slob around when you work at home.

Because I have an office. If I did not, it would be difficult for me to make people (including my 2 kids, husband, other family members and friends) understand that I am always busy, including on week-ends and holiday.

If it wasn't for the fact that I love the freedom and independence freelancing affords me and the fact that it pays so much better than almost any salaried position would in this field, I think I might actually be tempted to go for a salaried position, but I try to make up for working alone by going out, getting fresh air and meeting people. The added bonus about Starbucks and the like is that they are often frequented by the same people, so after a time you get to know people anyway.

All I can say, is thank God for my laptop!

Cheers,

Sarah (aka "coffee gal!")

PS: Totally know where you are coming from about looking like a fat, chavvy scumbag, Orla ... before I had my laptop, I must admit to my shame that I also had days where I didn't bother showering, but somehow you never really get into the day when you are all grubby and undressed. In fact, working outside everyday gives me an opportunity to make an effort with my appearance, and I think trying out new clothes and make-up are something that most women enjoy (having said that, I do specialise in fashion and cosmetics)

I have an office in Barcelona, 45 Km away from home. This is far enough to make sure that I'll be working regularly, and that "other activities" will not annoy me unless strictly necessary. Apart from this, my office is in the city centre, within reach of my main customers, work colleagues, kid's school, etc.

I CAN spend a whole day at home, though. And I feel great when I do it, because I have a beautiful mountain view, a nice garden and a few other inhabitants in it.

But could not just stay there for more than 1 day!!

At least, Monday through Friday, as I work as an in-house translator. Still, I'd prefer to work from home and never get out, unless it is for grocery shopping. What can I say, I love being home.

That just sounds so great! It's probably why I bought a laptop in the first place. If only we had Starbucks (or something even remotely similar) here...

I try to leave the house every day, but I have to admit that there are some days when I only get some fresh air taking out the mail or having lunch on my balcony. However, I'm ALWAYS at my desk looking as I would in an office with colleagues, except for the shoes

I need it!!! Jul 17, 2007

I need to go out at least for a few minutes, to breathe fresh air, to clear out my mind. It is really important as I work as a full-time freelance translator. Besides, I go to the gym three times a week in order to be in contact with other people. If I didn´t do that, I would feel as if I were a prisioner of my own house!!!

My working day starts when I get back from driving the kids to school. And I pick them up again as well.

Also, I try to take at least half an hour as a lunchbreak, and I usually go for groceries and errands in that time as well. Otherwise, I'd probably have lunch at my desk and it wouldn't be much of a break.

So, I go out at least two or three times a day, and I find these little breakaways increase productivity. Being away from the computer for a while is refreshing -

I teach at the university from Monday to Saturday, as a way of forcing me to go out, meet other people (though my students are mostly teenagers) and clear up my mind.
If I didn't teach, I would hardly go out. I really love being home and hate going out.
