Finding a teacher May 29, 2007

Following on this topic: http://www.proz.com/topic/72654, I'm looking for a clarinet teacher where I live. Not an easy task!

But this concern aside, I have the usual money worries, linked with the holiday planning for this summer And other health related worries, into which I won't go in too much details!

Finding a bigger flat May 29, 2007

My biggest concern at the moment is to find more space (I currently live in a 15 m² studio in Paris).

I have a CDD (short-term contract) and I work as an independant translator - which means that workload and money are good at the moment. But my employment situation isn't good enough for landlords, especialy when you know that there are 50 other people who want the same flat.

So here I am, 29 years old, having to ask my brother and my mother for their income tax and th

So here I am, 29 years old, having to ask my brother and my mother for their income tax and the huge amount of papers estate agencies request.

There's a 30 m² studio I'm interested in the 9th district - twice the space, yippee...

Unless I decide to move to Brittany at the end of my contract, of course! More space, less stress and hopefully a seaview...

For once I don't have anything to complain about May 29, 2007

I just moved in with my husband in our first property, I'm employed full-time, contracts are flowing and my cat hasn't peed on our bed since we moved. I keep my fingers crossed.

Congrats, Sonia!

Maintaining my skills May 29, 2007

I have put other. As a translator it is essential that we continuously maintain and enhance our skills, both linguistic and otherwise. It is nice to pass exams and all that sort of thing, but we need to keep high standards and feel in ourselves that we are increasing our knowledge and competence.

I have not been to my source language country (Denmark) for five months now, and it makes me worry in case my competence is not quite up to speed. I am pleased to say that I will be in

I have not been to my source language country (Denmark) for five months now, and it makes me worry in case my competence is not quite up to speed. I am pleased to say that I will be in Denmark next week to freshen up on any areas that have become rusty.

When I have long assignments I am often concerned that I am not giving myself time to learn vocabulary, listen to the radio and read. I do not want to become stale. I also enjoy the continuous learning process.

Not enough time May 29, 2007

At the moment I get more translation job requests than I can handle. As I have a parttime in-house job as a linguistic specialist and work as a freelance translator for the rest of the time, I need to decide what to do: continue the way I do now or go completely freelance.

Groetjes,
Evelyn

Many things May 29, 2007

I tend to dissapear into the screen when I am very busy and forget about all other things. But I really love the feeling of completing something or suddenly finding new insights in for instance software or translation phrases. It is healthy in that it can completely calm me from any other worry I might have.
But, if anybody wanted to move me to somewhere else, I'd probably keep on typing while clutching to my pc .....That couldn't possibly be healthy.

And I agree with Eliza Anna, there is allwas something to learn. It takes me 1 1/2 hours to purchase a few quality English newspapers, that I feel I must read for keeping up and improving competence.

PS: I'd like to congratulate Nina and Sonia:)!

Communication May 29, 2007

I voted "other", but it could have been "spiritual dilemmas". However, I say it's not spiritual but logical. My biggest concern as a member of the human race and as a translator is to help other people COMMUNICATE with each other. Apart from the money involved, for me it is highly gratifying to see two (or more) people understanding each other for the improvement of both. In these times of war, general "qualunquism" and biased finger-pointing, we neeed to communicate more than ever. Please pardo... See more
