Are you sure it wasn't 18 years ago?

Do you have a quill pen and parchment? Apr 1, 2014

Fax seems obsolete to me these days, when it's so much easier to send documents as attachments to emails.

The good old days Apr 1, 2014

of uncut fax paper spewing out by the metre from the fax machine, the translation then being faxed back to the customer who then had to write it all out again. wasn't it fun! (and I recall it leading to a demand for faster turnaround times - after all, if the text could reach us faster, we could also translate faster - logical, eh? - but nothing compared to today's "do it by yesterday" approach!)

Good one

German institutions and entities still seem to be quite fond of those stone-age appliances, though. Emails and attachments of scanned documents still seem to be "neuland".

And I get extremely frustrated when required to send anything by fax nowadays. It just seems so 20th century...

Now I remember Apr 1, 2014

I was contacted to do translations for one of the largest software companies on the planet, but they wanted all "official" correspondencies to be sent to them by fax!!
After telling them which year we had, mentioning that faxes are not really used any more, I sent the documents to be faxed to work with my wife and she faxed them for me. I had not used a fax for about 8 years before this.
Do not work with them any more....

Old skool Apr 1, 2014

Haven't used the fax for years now, but I did have to post a letter the other day

It seems you no longer have to lick stamps, which is nice

This made me chuckle too. There are some online services that will do it for you if you upload the file to them but for reasons of confidentiality they cannot be really be used professionally.

Have, but don't use Apr 1, 2014

Some years ago both my fax machines were declared "beyond repair", so I got rid of them.

To give an idea on how much they were used, I had them set up in tandem on a dedicated line. Machine #1 (thermal paper) would always pick up a fax call. If it ran out of paper, the connection would drop, and Machine #2 (plain paper) would pick up calls thereafter, until #1 were resupplied. I took this idea from hotel rooms always having two rolls of toilet paper.

I still have a dedi

I still have a dedicated landline for fax, connected to a multifunctional printer, but I haven't sent or received a fax for the past two years or so. Three faxes overall over the past four years. About time to put an end to it.

I think this is no longer secret nor valid, but I recall having translated some material from credit card companies about 10 years ago. In a nutshell, home-based freelancing professionals were given about twice as much credit for having different phone numbers for voice and fax. It made me wonder if some more needy people having one and the same number for both, who ever became aware of that, would consider swapping fax numbers with a friendly neighbor, just to have them different.

Few people nowadays know/recall what was a Telex machine. Quite soon the fax will follow this path. Does anyone still remember the sound of a dial-up Internet connection?

I used to Apr 1, 2014

I used to have one when I started out, but I'd say the fax machine is almost obsolete these days.

Yes, Apr 1, 2014

mainly for private clients who send me their (birth, marriage etc.) certificates in advance and show me their original documents when they pop in.
