When I am approached by agencies with a rather poor BB rating. Needless to say that to date I have never heard from one of them again

In general, no. I sometimes required it, particularly for large jobs from new direct clients, but finally the deal did not happen.

Because in my worldview, "Pay me in advance" translates as "I don't trust you". Not a good way to start a relationship IMHO.

We work mainly with large, well-established companies so there is no need
Otherwise we would start with a small job and take it from there

Very rarely, but it has little to do with whether they are new or old clients. If a potential corporate client with a good credit record wishes to send me work, then I will grant them credit terms, otherwise I will require payment prior to delivery, but offer a ten percent discount for this (an option that is also available to credit clients).

Apparently I live in one of the world's most trusting societies... but it is also one where people are easy to trace, and non-payers get chased up.
I don't take on large jobs from new clients as a rule, so I would survive not getting paid, but I have had so few problems over the years that I would not want to spoil my chances.
When I have had problems, they have not been with new clients! I assume good faith, and usually everything goes fine.

and by big jobs from new clients I at least ask for a quicker first payment than usual.

partly because I doubt they would ever accept this condition, and partly because I only work for (new) clients whom I believe I can trust.

So no, I never ask a new client to pay in advance because I always have some kind of reference before I accept the job. And so far, I have never had any payment problems.

I did it only once, but it was more to "take the temperature" of the client than to really request an advance payment and like Christine I don't take on large jobs from new clients as a rule.

but on occasion, when doing a very large project, the client offered to pay me part of it in advance.
But generally, i don't ask for that.

Only when it is a new private client, especially in another country, with a fairly large project and no business address or website or anything to give me any information about him. I think I have done it twice and both times the client had no problem with it and payed promptly.
