About the time... Jan 17, 2007

I don't know about the rest of you, but as I'll be coming from the DC area I wouldn't mind if we could meet earlier, not to drive back home too late in the night (and/or, do you know if there are buses, just like the ones between DC and New york?). Thanks!

Chinatown bus service Feb 5, 2007

There is a Chinatown bus service that runs from Phila to DC. The Apex bus line is just one example. $28 round trip from DC to Chinatown in Phila.

Thanks Joe Feb 5, 2007

I'll check that, and depending if it is close enough to the meeting place, I'll consider that possibility.

More about Chinatown buses Feb 5, 2007

There's also service from New York's Chinatown to Philadelphia's (all of a block from our Greyhound station, so it's not out of the way at all).

New Yorkers on a budget can also consider the (very) local train service: NJ Transit to Trenton and SEPTA to Philly. Not the fastest option, though.

Yes, it's downtown Feb 17, 2007

It's in Chinatown. Judging from the address given above, it's on 10th Street about three blocks north of the corner of 10th and Market (Market being the main east-west street in downtown Philly.)

The restaurant is just a couple of blocks from the Greyhound/Trailways bus station, the Chinatown bus station, and the Market East train station.

If you come in on Amtrak, take a SEPTA Regional Rail train east to Market East.

People coming from southern New Jersey can take the PATCO High-Speed Line to 8th and Market. To keep warm, you can walk through the Gallery shopping mall from 8th and Market to 10th and Market, and then turn right (North) on 10th Street to get to the restaurant.

Another caution to Amtrak travelers Feb 17, 2007

There are TWO Amtrak stations in Philadelphia. One is their usual station at 30th Street, which is where you should get off. Some trains also stop in North Philadelphia, which is not the best area for a lost tourist to be poking about after dark.

Warning from Rosali-Philadelphia native Feb 19, 2007

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET OFF AT THE NORTH PHILADELPHIA TRAIN STATION. It is dangerous up there and VERY dark. 30th ST is perfectly fine though, from which you can take the SEPTA regional rail train to Market East.

Driving Directions Feb 20, 2007

I copied the directions from the Rosenbach Museum's website and adjusted them a little bit:
"Directions from all points south:
Take 95 North to 676 West
Follow signs toward Center City to Ben Franklin Parkway/Art Museum exit"
If there is one on 10th Street the Restaurant seems to be right next to it on the left; the Broad Street / 15th Street exit is too far and you have to drive back.
If you google "Charles Plaza" Philadelphia, you will find a map that gives you

Driving Direction Feb 20, 2007

Broad Street is the first exit off of 676 in to the city. If you take broad street exit it loops around and over vine/676 and turn left on Vine (headed back the way you just came) stay on street level (don't go down on to 676) and you can take vine 4 blocks to 10th street turn right on 10th street (one way in that direction) and the restaurant is just 1.5 blocks just before spring street.

Directions to Charles Plaza Feb 21, 2007

Follow directions given by Drew MacFadyen (get off 676 at Broad Street exit) and go over street-level Vine St. to 10th, where you turn right. Also, right before Spring St. is a little street called Winter St. where there is 2 hour metered parking if you are lucky. Note: Directions given by Gudrun Dauner are inaccurate. --Rosali
