Powwow: Sheffield - United Kingdom
|
|
2pm would be better for me, but 1pm is ok if it suits everyone else better
hi everyone
The powwow is nothing formal at all so feel free to show up whenever you feel like/is convenient for you.
Alex and I will be there from about 1pm.
There won't be any agenda so you can come anytime - the idea is just to meet other translators. The only kind of "formal" thing will just be if you want to have your ID verified - as I have been given the authority to VID ProZ.com members.

Please excuse use of Powwow for discussing a job, but can't think of an easier way to contact people in Sheffield.
This job is only feasible for people located in Sheffield or surrounding area.

I've had an enquiry from one of my regular clients about a FR>EN job which is 47,000 words. The subject matter is Software related to medical equipment, technical but not requiring detailed medical knowledge. Delivery date unknown yet, but the client would want it in 10 working days from go ahead, which means 2 people working on it.
The job has to be done in Trados, and the TM needs to be shared. This would mean working on 2 networked machines. I have the necessary to do all that, but it would mean working at my place in Sheffield, not separately. If any help in Trados needed I can supply that.
If anyone interested, please email me asap. ▲ Collapse

Hi. I have never attended a powwow so I dont' know what to expect. I presume it is open to all. Are there any requirements? What format will it take?

Hello Mary (and everybody!)
I have never been to a powwow either but the way I see it is just an informal gathering of professionals working in the translation business.
To me it will be a way to talk with people who do the same job, make new contacts, share experience and best practices, get advice when you are just starting as a freelancer, etc.

We're just meeting at a nice pub in Sheffield and there is no specific agenda. The idea is just to chat with people. I am not going to do any presentation or anything.
It's open to all - no restriction as to the language combination - as long as you work in the translation business, whether you're a freelancer or an agency.
In the coming days I will put a web page up on the IDFP website so that you find all the details about the powwow.
See you all soon!

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am a bit less nervous about coming now. It'll be fun to 'network' so I'll try to make it.
tnkw (X) Local time: 00:33 español al inglés + ... Travelling to Sheffield City Centre | Sep 22, 2004 |
For anyone travelling by car who does not want to drive into the city centre, Supertram offer a £3 park and ride fare from Halfway terminus, to the East of the city, 10 minutes from the M1 at Jn 30. Journey time to West St (the closest stop) is about 35 minutes. Walking time to the pub is about 5 minutes from West Street stop.
Best wishes to all

re. Travelling to Sheffield City Centre | Sep 22, 2004 |
Very good suggestion Nicholas. I will include it on my powwow webpage.
Actually I think that's what Alex and I will do as we now live 2 minutes away from the Halfway tram station.
Do you know exactly where on West Street the stop you mentioned is? My A-Z map shows a stop between Eldon st and Westfield Ter, is that the one?
If that's the case it is indeed just 2 blocks away from Wellington st where the Devonshire Cat is. So that'd great!
Thanks

Hello Alexa,
my name is Charles Ebert and I presently work as a translator at a local agency. Thank you for accepting me at your PowWow. May I also bring my partner with me (who is also a translator)?
I am really curious to meeting you all tomorrow!
Kind regards

I just wanted to thank you all of you who could make it today (as well as all of those who tried but couldn't come). Alex and I had a super time and I hope you did too. Virtual communication is great but it is so good to be able to meet people face to face.
Alex took a few pictures this afternoon and I should receive some more soon so I'll upload them on the powwow page that I made ont the IDFP website. I'll let you know when it's ready!
