I voted Yes, because I did accept one such payment last year, a small sum for the translation of a marriage certificate. But I invoiced and recorded it in the normal way, and declared it in my tax return, so it was all quite above-board.

The client wants to pay me in cash...so I´ll tell him...NO, no, no, please don't...what am I going to do with cash?
No..pretty please, give me a check so it will take 4 days till I get my money ..or better yet..pay me with Paypal so they will take their accustomed "share" and it will take me 5 days to get my money...or why not Western? All I have to do is go to their office downtown and have them take another portion of my hard earned money or better yet, please send me an electron... One: have I ever accepted a cash payment? Answer: no.
Two: would I ever accept a cash payment? Answer: certainly, provided I had met the client in person. I wouldn't be interested in receiving cash through the post.
I keep my own paper trail and declare all income in whatever form it comes to me, so that is not the issue.

Short translations (birth, marriage, etc. certificates for example), particularly in the case of one-time local clients, are always paid in cash.
When a client picks up his/her translation (on paper, duly stamped and sealed) I hand over an official invoice, which is paid on the spot.
This is our usual way of doing business, it's interesting to know that things are different in other countries

It does not happen very often, and only if I had a work meeting with the client and he gave my the money in cash. I do the exact same thing with some local clients.

Yes, of course, with local clients. If the company is close-by, I go on foot to pick up the money or I travel by bus, which costs me US$0.70 for a two-way trip. That's way cheaper than being deducted high commissions and transfer fees from banks and PayPal!

I accept cash payments from direct local clients (smaller amounts), but not without invoicing and declaring them the normal way.

Simply because I don't do small jobs for individuals, (a) because they usually involve a trip to the local notary, which is time-comsuming, (b) because I just don't enjoy translating any form of certificate, school transcript etc and so am happy to refer them to another colleague and (c) because many (certainly not all) people here would ask me not to issue an official receipt so as to avoid paying the VAT and how am I to know they're not an undercover agent for Inland Revenue ... Yes, I'd happily accept cash, but it very rarely happens. Most of my clients are far away.

It is extremely rare for me to use cash. The ECB has never awarded me Membership Rewards, complimentary insurance, free concierge service, or any other goodies, on the basis of my paying with cash. I have also never been issued new money as replacement for lost or stolen cash. Thus, I prefer cards. Of course I also accept card payments myself.
Once in a blue moon, I have the misfortune of parking my car at some deity-forsaken 19th century facility that does not accept cards. Very in... See more It is extremely rare for me to use cash. Very infrequently, a minor cash transaction may also be necessary in order to gain, or reward, some particular service level. (Normal tips at restaurants and hotels can, of course, be charged to a card.) In total, such occasions occur perhaps twice a year, so I withdraw a small amount of cash once in maybe two or three years. You can imagine that I struggle to remember my PIN codes.
Does coin and banknote usage entail any advantage for anyone here? (The only cause I can think of is to avoid Big Brother; not that using cash would go a very long way towards that.) ▲ Collapse
