A great deal has happened since my update to the 360 magazine last summer. It has been a good twelve months for the Group with successes in many areas of our business. We have grown successfully both organically and through the acquisitions of the Carpenter businesses in Technical Ceramics and the equity stake in the NP Aerospace business in the UK.
One of the highlights from my perspective of the past year has been the opening of our new global R&D centre in the Thermal Ceramics division which shows the Group’s commitment to being at the forefront of materials and process technology. I am also delighted at the focus and commitment we have made on operational excellence and World Class Manufacturing initiatives across our businesses.
This focus on operational excellence has become all the more important given the current world economic climate which is significantly more challenging now than it was this time last year. Demand is down in a number of industries and geographies whilst inflation is high, especially in energy and raw materials.
We are all familiar with the way our own household bills have increased. The same is true for the input costs in our factories. Raw materials and energy are very significant expenses for us and, as we have seen, both have been rising rapidly. We need to do all that we can to minimise usage and wastage of both.
This is an area where every one of us can make a difference. We can all help reduce energy consumption, from small actions of everyday care and attention on energy usage to exploring innovative approaches to efficiency. As an example, one of the key R&D initiatives for our Thermal Ceramics division is to find step-change reductions in the amount of energy used in the manufacturing process.
Another area where we can all make a difference is on striving for on-time deliveries. Not only does this make for happier customers it reduces the amount of stock sitting on our shelves or our production lines, tying up capital that could be better used elsewhere to invest in growing the business.
In the context of a slowdown in general global demand it becomes all the more important to concentrate on higher growth, higher margin, less economically cyclical markets such as medical, defence and renewable energy and on higher growth geographies such as Asia, South America and the Middle East.
To keep ahead of our competitors in all areas, we need to add value to everything we do. Central to this is maintaining a customer-led approach. By understanding our customers’ products, processes and needs, we can work with them to tailor solutions and add value.
Overall, however, the single most important aspect which sustains and drives our business performance is our people. It is through the actions of all of us together that we can make a positive difference to our company and thrive where so many others are struggling to survive in more difficult economic conditions.
As a prime example of us acting on our strategic priority of finding, keeping and developing the right people, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome this year two new chief executives to our Carbon and Molten Metal Systems divisions. Neither are new to Morgan, showing our commitment to developing talent internally, meaning that both bring a wealth of experience and expertise.
Don Klas was promoted to CEO of the Carbon Division in January this year. He has more than 27 years’ experience in the Carbon business and is well placed to make a significant contribution to the continued development and success of the division going forward. In recent years he has done an excellent job driving forward the performance of the Carbon Americas region and has already made a significant positive impact on the overall division in his new role.
John Maxwell became CEO of Molten Metal Systems (MMS) on 1st October 2008, taking over from Phil Wright who will take a much deserved retirement at the end of this year. I’d like to extend my personal thanks to Phil for his effort and commitment.
John also brings extensive experience to the role on the back of his 18 years service with Morgan Crucible during which time he has lived and worked across the globe for the Group. He commenced his career with the Company directly from university into the Thermal Ceramics division in the UK.
He subsequently moved to Augusta and after a period of four years in varying product and marketing roles transferred to the Crucibles business in North Haven, Connecticut. John progressed to the position of US President and acquired the additional responsibility of sales and marketing for the Americas and Asia as well as the more recent role of General Manager for China.
I am delighted to see both Don and John in their new CEO roles and wish them all the best for the future.
All in all, it has been another eventful twelve months for the Group but with good continued progress in an increasingly difficult environment. Thank you all for your contributions so far this year and to the efforts I know we will all put in together to continue to make the business even stronger and better going forward.

Várias coisas aconteceram desde minha última atualização da revista 360 no último verão. Foram 12 meses ótimos para o Grupo e tivemos sucesso em várias áreas de nossos negócios. Além do crescimento orgânico, adquirimos os empreendimentos da Carpenter na Technical Ceramics e a participação acionária nos negócios da NP Aerospace no Reino Unido.
Em minha opinião, um dos pontos altos do último ano foi a abertura de nosso centro global de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento na unidade da Thermal Ceramics, mostrando o compromisso do Grupo em estar à frente nos quesitos materiais e tecnológicos. Também estou lisonjeado com o foco e compromisso que tivemos ao buscar excelência operacional e com as iniciativas de Produção com Qualidade Internacional em nossos empreendimentos.
Esse foco em excelência operacional se tornou ainda mais importante devido ao atual estado da economia global, o que torna este ano ainda mais desafiador do que o mesmo período do ano passado. A procura diminuiu em vários mercados e regiões, ao mesmo tempo em que temos inflação elevada, especialmente, em energia e matéria-prima.
Já estamos acostumados com a maneira pela qual nossas contas básicas aumentaram e podemos dizer o mesmo sobre os custos dos insumos de nossas fábricas. Matéria-prima e energia são despesas expressivas, cujo preço vimos aumentar rapidamente. Precisamos fazer todo o possível para reduzir o uso e o desperdício de ambos, uma tarefa em que cada um de nós pode fazer a diferença. Todos nós podemos ajudar na redução do consumo de energia, desde pequenas ações no dia-a-dia até o desenvolvimento de abordagens inovadoras visando maior eficiência. Um bom exemplo foi uma das principais iniciativas de nosso centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento na unidade da Thermal Ceramics, que por meio da mudança de etapas obteve redução da energia utilizada no processo de produção.
Outra área onde podemos fazer a diferença é em prezar pela pontualidade das entregas. Além de deixar os clientes satisfeitos, isso ajuda a reduzir a quantidade de produtos estocados em nossas prateleiras ou em nossa linha de produção, imobilizando um capital que poderia ser mais útil em outros lugares no desenvolvimento dos negócios.
Em um contexto de diminuição da demanda global, torna-se ainda mais importante concentrar-nos em maior crescimento, maior margem, em áreas como Ásia, América do Sul e Oriente Médio e menos em mercados cíclicos menos econômicos como a área médica, de defesa e de energias renováveis.
Para nos manter a frente da concorrência em todas as áreas, precisamos agregar valor a tudo que fazemos. Em primeiro lugar, devemos manter uma abordagem voltada ao cliente. Ao compreender os produtos, processos e necessidades de nossos clientes, podemos trabalhar em conjunto para desenvolver soluções e agregar valor.
No entanto, devemos acima de tudo, lembrar que o aspecto mais importante para alimentar e orientar o desempenho de nosso trabalho é o nosso pessoal. É com nossas ações conjuntas que podemos fazer a diferença em nossa empresa e atingirmos o sucesso onde muitos lutam para sobreviver em condições econômicas mais complexas.
Como um bom exemplo de nossa estratégia prioritária de encontrar, manter e investir no desenvolvimento das pessoas certas, eu gostaria de dar as boas- vindas aos dois novos diretores das divisões Carbon e Molten Metal Systems.

My name is Gabriel Nogueira and I was born in Curitiba, Southern Brazil to a Luso-Brazilian family in 1981.
I attended a Jesuit school for primary and high school education and UFPR (Federal University of Paraná, Brazil) for my degree in Language, Linguistics, Literature and Translation in Portuguese and German, which I finished in 2005.
My family have an important local bulldozer spare parts business at my home town Curitiba, where I had my first job and started to develop my taste for machines and mechanical engineering.
I've always been into travelling and I’ve spent my gap year from the university in London working for a
Classic Italian Scooter Restoration Workshop. I've also travelled and lived all around Europe, North and South America and I'm fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish and German.
All my interests in life contributed directly to my translation skills and they are all directly responsible for me being able to work in such varied fields from mechanics to literature and from music to cycling, for example.
My main speciality is translating workshop/parts manuals and websites for lathes, punch presses and drill machines; motorcycle, cars and trains; telecommunication and electrical-electronic appliances.
