Phone calls now flit over Wi-Fi networks at little or no cost to the callers. It is the story of the telecom industry--hundreds of billions of dollars are evaporating into the ether.
When doctors at San Antonio Community Hospital bark orders into their new wireless phones, sensitive medical information will travel not over the phone system but via a Wi-Fi network--technology originally designed to link laptops to the Internet. It seems a risky move: Sending phone calls over Internet-style networks has long been the province of techies who could put up with mediocre quality and uncertain security.
Yet the administrators at the Upland, Calif. hospital have concluded the newest generation of Wi-Fi (stands for "wireless fidelity") phones is so reliable and secure that it can be trusted with confidential patient information and critical medical instructions. Using the system, which goes live this month, doctors will be able to call from stairwells and other crannies where cell phones and regular cordless phones fail. Fancy features will let nurses instantly locate empty beds and admit patients from the waiting room. What's more, because phone calls ride on board the hospital's own wireless network, there will be no monthly phone bills from cellular carriers.
The new technology at San Antonio Community Hospital heralds a telecom future that is both brilliant and bleak: fantastic devices and free services for consumers, disappearing dollars for telecom companies and their long-suffering investors. A similar cycle began in the late 1990s when phone calls traveling between distant cities and continents began hitching cheap rides on Internet-style networks built for data. By 2000, after fiber-optic cables whittled the price of carrying a call to just about zero and new competitors flooded the market, the long-distance industry had peaked and begun a steep slide. It has since seen a third of its annual revenue vanish in four years--$35 billion, poof!--and the future is grim.
Now the same kind of destruction, courtesy of the omnivorous Internet, is engulfing the local phone monopolies and even threatens the cell phone industry. It promises to transform the phone system with new competition, plunging prices and a passel of new features. This next wave begins with "Voice over IP," which means zapping phone calls over the Internet (or private networks built like the Internet). It continues with "Voice over Wi-Fi," Wi-Fi being a free wireless on-ramp to the Net. It appears so unstoppable that even the old Baby Bells and cellular carriers have accepted it. Now they are about to accelerate the migration, launching a multibillion-dollar rebuilding binge to overhaul their old networks and offer cut-rate Net phone service. This, of course, will speed the demise of their mainstay business of voice traffic. But they don't have any choice.

Traducción - inglés The use of new technology is influenced by many factors, some internal and some external to the firm offering the new technology. While some of the factors are controllable, others are not. However, the complexity of these factors does not dissuade marketing analysts from developing techniques attempting to explain and predict the salability levels of new products in the long term.
This paper presents a tool for assessing the probability of adopting a new technology or product before it is marketed. Specifically, this research offers managers in firms dealing with mobile electronic commerce, a way of measuring perceptions of technology usage, as an index for assessing the tendency to adopt a given technology.
The paper is based on an ongoing study dealing with M-commerce in Israel and worldwide. It is centered on creating a research tool for predicting the usage of M-commerce in Israel, based on the PCI model. The suggested model is based on a questionnaire presented to the potential buyer, containing questions linking the buyer's perception of the various aspects of the technological innovation offered to him, and his tendency to buy, and therefore to adopt it. The tool was found to have high reliability and validity levels. The average score in the questionnaire is used in order to predict the probability that the mobile electronic commerce technology will be adopted. Implications related to M-commerce technology in Israel and worldwide are discussed.

תלמידי רמת 3 יחידות לימוד נחשבים לתלמידים החלשים ביותר במתמטיקה, בהשוואה לחבריהם ברמות 4 ו 5 יחידות לימוד, כתיבה של הוכחה מתמטית והתמודדות עם הנושא, שעבור רוב התלמידים הוא חדש ולא מובן, היא דבר קשה בפני עצמו. שילוב הקשיים האלו יצר את המצע למחקר הזה.
בעבודה זו בדקתי כיצד מוכיחים תלמידי 3 יחידות לימוד בכיתות י' י"א ו י"ב טענות מתחום תורת המספרים.
הטענות הינן טענות משני טיפוסים: טענות מטיפוס "לכל" וטענות מטיפוס "קיים".
חלק מהטענות היו טענות תקפות עבור כל המספרים, חלקן תקף עבור תחום מספרים מסוים וחלק נוסף – טענות שאינן תקפות עבור כל המספרים.
במחקר שני שלבים.
מטרת השלב הראשון הייתה לבדוק כיצד התלמידים מוכיחים את הטענות ובמיוחד לשים דגש על היכולת שלהם להבדיל בין שני סוגי טענות אלו.
לצורך זה התבקשו 106 תלמידי רמת 3 יחידות לימוד, מבית ספר תיכון במרכז הארץ, מתוכם: 38 תלמידים ב י', 36 תלמידי י"א ו 32 תלמידי י"ב, לענות על שאלון שהכיל 8 טענות מתמטיות:
4 מתוכן טענות מטיפוס "לכל" ו - 4 מתוכן טענות מטיפוס "קיים".
ממצאי השלב הראשון של המחקר הראו כי:
1. הרוב הגדול של התלמידים משתמש בדרך אינדוקטיבית כדי להוכיח או להפריך טענות. דרך זו מתאימה להוכחת טענות תקפות מטיפוס "קיים" ולהפרכת טענות לא תקפות מטיפוס "לכל", אך לא מתאימה (אינה מהווה הוכחה מלאה) לטענות נכונות מטיפוס "לכל" ולהפרכת טענות לא נכונות מטיפוס "קיים".
2. תלמידי י"ב השיגו את התוצאות הטובות יותר בהשוואה לחבריהם הצעירים יותר, ממצא זה תומך בספרות המחקרית הטוענת כי נדרשת בגרות מתמטית לצורך התמודדות עם הוכחה.
מטרת השלב השני של המחקר הייתה לבדוק, האם התערבות יחידנית, שבמהלכה הודגמה לתלמידים דרך הוכחה מתאימה, מסייעת לתלמידים להבין את ההבדל בין הטענות ולהביא לכך שיוכיחו טענות בעצמם.
לשלב השני נבחרו 10 מתלמידי י"ב. התלמידים שנבחרו היו אלה, שבשאלון הראשון ידעו לשפוט בצורה נכונה, נכונות או אי נכונות של טענה, ודרך ההוכחה או ההפרכה שלהם את הטענות הייתה אינדוקטיבית. תלמידים אלה התבקשו להשיב על שאלון נוסף, בשאלון זה העבודה הייתה יחידנית. התלמידים התבקשו להתייחס לזוגות של טענות מספריות, ונדרשו להוכיח אותן. התלמידים רואינו תוך כדי עבודתם. במהלך העבודה התלמידים עברו "התערבות" יחידנית, כלומר התערבות בה הוצגו להם דפוסי הוכחה תקפים לטענה תקפה מטיפוס "לכל" (הוכחה אלגברית), ודפוס הוכחה תקף לטענה תקפה מטיפוס "קיים" (דוגמא מאשרת).

ממצאי השלב השני של המחקר מראים כי:
1. התלמידים מבחינים בהבדל בין שני טיפוסי הטענות "לכל" ו"קיים". מרביתם מודעים לכך, שיש צורך בהוכחה אחרת לטענות תקפות מטיפוס "לכל" (אחרת מההוכחה שכתבו בשאלון הראשון) אך הם לא יודעים איך להוכיח טענות אלה.
2. לאחר ההתערבות, שכללה דוגמא להוכחה מלאה לטענה תקפה מטיפוס "לכל", התלמידים הוכיחו בצורה מלאה טענות מסוג זה. את הידע שנרכש בשלב הזה של העבודה התלמידים התקשו להעביר ולהשתמש בו כדי להפריך טענה לא נכונה מטיפוס "קיים".

Students studying for 3 credit units of Mathematics for their high-school diploma are considered the weakest in this subject, compared to their friends who take 4 or 5 credit units. Writing a mathematical explanation and the overall understanding of this field of study is in itself a new and complex task for most of these students. The combination of these difficulties forms the basis for the present research.
In this study I have tested how 3 unit students, grades 10, 11 and 12, prove mathematical statements.
The statements used were of two types: "for every" type statements and "there exists" type statements.
Some of the statements used are valid for all numbers, some for a certain range of numbers, while the remaining ones are not valid for all numbers.
The study consisted of two stages.
The aim of the first stage was to find how the students prove statements, while taking special notice of their ability to distinguish between the two types of statements used.
106 students from a high school in central Israel, all studying for 3 credit units of Mathematics, were asked to answer a questionnaire, which included 8 Mathematical statements. 4 statements were of the "for every" type, and 4 were of the "there exists" type. Of the 106 students which participated in the study, 38 were 10th grade students, 36 were 11th graders and the remaining 32 students were 12th graders.
The findings of the first stage of the study are as follows:
1. The majority of students use an inductive method of thinking in order to prove or contradict a statement. This method is suitable for proving valid "there exists” type statements and for contradicting non-valid "for every" type statements, but is not suitable (does not constitute as a complete explanation) for proving true statements of the "for every" type and for contradicting false statements of the "there exists" type.
2. 12th grade students obtained the highest score compared to their younger counterparts. This finding supports the literature stating that a certain Mathematical maturity is required for coping with the process of proving a statement.
The aim of the second stage of the study was to find if a specific intervention, during which students were shown the correct method of proving a statement, may assist the students in understanding the difference between the statement types and may prompt them to prove statements on their own.
Ten 10th grade students were selected to participate in the second stage. This group of students consisted of those students who in the first questionnaire succeeded in correctly judging the validity or falseness of a statement, and which used an inductive method to prove or contradict the statements. These students were asked to answer a second questionnaire, in which they were required to work individually. They were asked to look at pairs of numeral statements, and try to prove them. The students were interviewed during their work, and underwent an individual "intervention" during which proof patterns for a valid statement of the "for every" type (algebraic proof) and for a valid statement of the "there exists" type (approving example) were presented to them.
After the intervention the students were asked to prove two valid statements: one of the "for every" type, and the other of the "there exists" type. They were also asked to contradict 2 non-valid statements: one of the "for every" type, and the other of the "there exists" type.
The findings of the second stage of the study are as follows:
1. The students were able to distinguish between the two types of statements: "for every" and "there exists". Most of them were aware of the fact that a difference type of proof is needed for valid statements of the "for every" type (different from the proof they have written in the first questionnaire), but they did not know how to prove these statements.
2. After the intervention, which included an example of a complete proof of a "for every" type statement, the students were able to correctly prove statements of this type. The students encountered difficulties when attempting to use the knowledge they have acquired during this stage in order to contradict a false statement of the "there exists" type.
