Texto de origen - español Resulta así particularmente relevante el hecho de que la vida no se haya logrado definir como una propiedad o facultad general, abstracta o independiente, sino precisamente en razón de propiedades harto tangibles y notorias que, a la luz de los datos de la biología, presentan ciertos sistemas complejos, múltiples y diversos llamados organismos, criaturas, individuos o seres vivientes. En las palabras del notable fisiólogo mexicano Hugo Aréchiga (1999): “La vida es una función compleja de vastos conjuntos de moléculas, integrados en un nivel superior de organización, que conocemos como individuo o ser vivo.” Notemos que Aréchiga astutamente evade decir que el nivel superior es “la vida” y opta en cambio por el de “ser vivo”. Entonces, antes de intentar definir a la vida como una facultad, será provechoso estipular aquello que caracteriza a un organismo vivo, es decir determinar las reglas y estrategias que el agente, individuo u organismo vivo utiliza en la contienda por la supervivencia y la fecundidad, que en conjunto vienen a ser el triunfo en el juego. En otras palabras: si concedemos que una definición satisfactoria de la vida vendría a tomar la forma de una teoría general de los biosistemas, es necesario definir las propiedades que la conforman.
Traducción - inglés It is thus particularly significant that life has not been successfully defined as a general, abstract or independent property or faculty, but rather in terms of highly tangible and evident properties which, in light of biological data, exhibit certain complex, multiple and diverse systems called organisms, creatures, individuals or living beings. In the words of the prominent Mexican physiologist Hugo Arechiga (1999): “Life is a complex function of vast collections of molecules, integrated into a higher level of organization, which we know as the individual or living being.” Note that Arechiga astutely avoids referring to the higher level as “life”, and opts instead for “living being”. Therefore, before attempting to define life as a faculty, it would be helpful to stipulate first what characterizes a living organism; i.e., to determine the rules and strategies that the agent, individual or living organism uses in its contention for survival and fertility, which collectively assure its victory in the game. In other words: if we allow that a satisfactory definition of life should take the form of a general theory of biosystems, we must define the properties that shape it.
