1.- No lo sabía (y eso está por verse); 2.- Sí lo sabemos, digo, supongo, la mayoría de los mexicanos. (Aunque no sea un "deporte" muy extendido que digamos... simplemente por ser muy caro -caballos, sillas, trajes, desplazamientos, etc.), restringido básicamente a El Bajío y, de alguna manera, relacionado con los ricos hacendados, aunque provenga del quehacer diario de los peones de éstos. De hecho, existen estudios bastantes serios que confirman que la charrería fue impulsada desde el naciente poder para "cimentar" una "identidad nacional". En cambio, el jaripeo (la simple monta de toros o caballos broncos) sí que conoce un éxito popular muy extendido, como en mi pueblo, siempre acompañado de música llamada "de banda". Hay que verlo.

irónico Es irónico, pues, que el evento charro más importante del mundo se celebra en Canadá (el Calgary Stampede). Y sabían, por si es de interés para alguien, que la charrería es el deporte nacional oficial de Mexico?

No habiendo... ...equivalente, lo dejaría tal cual y con una pequeña nota, poniendo, ojo, que el rodeo estadounidense se inspiró en la charrería, y no al revés, por conciencia profesional... e histórica.

I have heard the phrase "rodeo grounds" to describe the area where a North American rodeo is held.

A Companion Guide to La Charreada
Mexico has its own version of the rodeo is called la charreada. This basic guide is designed to enhance the enjoyment of the competition for those unfamiliar with Mexico's national sport by offering a brief introduction to the traditional horsemanship skills that will be displayed by the charros (horsemen).
El Lienzo
***The keyhole-shaped lienzo charro (arena) comprises two main areas***. The first part of the competition makes use of la manga (sleeve), the enclosed passage facing the stands that leads into the central ring. The remaining suertes are confined within the ruedo (ring), after the wide gates at the near end of the manga are closed. Adjacent to these are pens and chutes for holding the toros (bulls) and yeguas (mares) used in the competition.

Juan Jacob, I suggested using both "grounds/arena". [The charreada or charrería is a competitive event similar to rodeo and was developed from animal husbandry practices ...]. I suggest then that you post your own equivalent.
agree Charles Davis : Arena or grounds are general enough to cover this. I'm all for respecting cultural specificity, but if we take that too far we'll never translate anything.

Thank you. However, I believe the "lienzo charro" (the term requested here) refers to the arena itself, while charrería would be the "Mexican-style rodeo".
