Discussion

bigedsenior Aug 5, 2014:
"orejas" refers to the bolt holes (lugs) on the outside of the valve, used to bolt the valve in-line with the piping. Otherwise, the valves are mounted in a connecting sleeve welded to the piping.

Al Zaid Aug 5, 2014:
Yes. Context, please. Mariposa may refer to some things which are translated differently.
Neil Ashby Aug 5, 2014:
@ Asker How about some context, please, the sentence with the term, a few sentences before and after. Maybe you could even enlighten us by telling us where or what the 'mariposa' is attached to, its purpose, its size, etc.......there are 100s of details you could help us with.
Chris Neill Aug 5, 2014:
@asker They make a specific reference to "orejas"..see neilmacs discription..A "valvula mariposa" doesn't have "orejas", but a "tuerca mariposa" does . But again, without more context it's really just speculation

geared butterfly wheel / valve

En coches, una mariposa es una pieza giratoria que controla la admisión del aire en los cilindros.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Neil Ashby : If it was a "mariposa" in a car, although the subject is apparently petroleum, then I think we'd call it a "choker plate" or simply "butterfly" (according to Routledge).

There is NOTHING in the scant context provided to indicate that this is a valve. Caveat emptor!

"De orejas" refers to the "wings".... and is already included in the translation "wingnut/butterfly nut"... etc.

agree neilmac : Given the context "the name of a item in engineering", it's a very big maybe...
