it is saying that the epidural would diminish the chances of the procedure to be carried out for academic resons or purposes... it´s normal for students to be present in a lot of procedures

I understood it as meaning that medical students were present or the procedure was being recorded or something for teaching purposes. Does this not fit with the context?
