I recently got a laptop with Windows 7 (Toshiba Satellite, 6 MB ram, AMD Quad-Core)
When setting up the microphone with Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.5, I get the message "Microphone too loud." I reduced the recording sensitivity in the system settings, and the microphone one time kind of passed the tests, but the recognition was lousy. I tried the microphone with the Windows 7 speech recognition, and it seem to work fine (after I set the sensitivity to a normal level again). I then tried it with DNS at the same volume level. Same message. The recording level indicator of the first test screen is at 0 and it's still too loud. But in spite of all the warnings, I went ahead and dictated with the "too loud microphone", and the speech recognition seems to work fine.
However, I would like to know why the microphone is deemed too loud and whether I am not missing out on better recognition while working under these strange circumstances.
BTW, I tried this with two microphones, one regular (Andrea) and one USB (Plantronics) - same results.
Does anybody have any ideas?

I've occasionally had the same problem, but with the microphone supposedly not being loud enough. However, if the speech recognition is fine, it hardly seems worth worrying about.

But I had the same problem with dragon when i had it and never got to the bottom of it.
However in the end i gave up with dragon completely nor because of this issue but i found that even after extensive training and corrections it was taking me twice as long to dictate as it was to type as it just didn't like my accent at all.

Me too - recently got a laptop with Windows 7 (Toshiba Satellite, 6 MB ram, AMD Quad-Core).
I also bought Dragon and the headset/mic that came with it left a lot to be desired (normally I'd just say "rubbish" but that might be against the site rules). Let's just say it was OK for Skype but not great for the VR.
I then bought a more up-market headset (around 20-30 euros) for VR and it's all plain sailing now.

You mean W7 has a built-in VR? So I may have squandered all that time and money in vain? Thanks yet again, MR Gates.
It takes me all my time to find my usual stuff with W7 - I hate it for making everything look so different from XP and changing the names and locations of my most used programs and commands. I also had to pay someone to remove all the popup junk and clutter and uninstall the ponderous, overpriced and clunky Mcafee antivirus that came embedded in the thing. Not to mention installing a virtual OS to run my dictionaries and other programs that won't run on the W7 platform.
