I probably talk to my Yahoo contacts most often, followed by Hotmail, and then the Jabber client attached to Gmail, but I tie them all together using Trillian, which is a very useful piece of software: http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/ . There is a free version.

... because it was the first one I signed up for and most of my business contacts use it. I much prefer the yahoo messenger and webmail design and features, but only use yahoo for 2 o 3 friends, one of whom is also a colleague. I tried the Gmail beta version and didn't find it easy to use.

I had Windows' Messenger active for a while and enthusiastically added my friends etc.... to discover that I often dealt with instant messages at moments in which I had to be concentrated in actual work. So I disabled it all in the end. Email works a lot better for me, as it allows me to offer a more focused response to any communication (both private and work-related).

I do not find instant messengers to be necessary in day to day business exchanges. Anything that the client wants to know can be easily found out via e-mail.
I use Skype to talk for free to my relatives abroad, and Skype Out to contact those clients who are reluctant to pay.

Adium for Mac OS X (multi-chat client, it supports virtually everything, except skype).
Most of my contacts seem to prefer MSN, whereas I'd much prefer aol (bacause of ichat, clearly).
I agree it is distracting and try to use it only sparingly when I'm working.

What is the reason for you to use Skype Out as a mean of collecting late payments/reminding late payers? Thanks in advance for your answer.

I use quite a few communicators, but most of all Skype. For a few reasons, to most important of them are"
- many of my friends and people I collaborate with use Skype,
- I live away from my family and friends and Skype allows me to call them really cheaply (some of them don't have a computer).

I have a Skype account but I almost never use it. It's handy as a fallback option if my e-mail server goes down and I need to transfer files to or from a client, though FTP would work just as well if the client knows how to use it.

I briefly installed Yahoo messenger, but every time I received an email it made a horrible exploding sound which inevitably startled and distracted me.
I have Skype installed as one of my clients requested it, but have never used it for instant messaging.
My clients generally send an email or occasionally telephone; none has ever expressed the need to instant message me. The same goes for friends.

It's the instant part I don't like (answer my message now or else!), and the fact that they know you're loggged on, so ignoring messages would be virtually impossible, or deemed to be very impolite. I tried out a few (cannot remember which) in the past and hated them. Aren't email, home phone and mobile enough? I know there are people who cannot not answer the phone when it rings, but I am not one of them. If I don't want to be disturbed or contacted, I ignore everything. That's what answerphone... I have two MSN accounts: one for business and one for friends, for that same reason. I connect the latter after 8pm. Sounds confusing, but it works like a charm

Too right! That has worked well so often.
Plus:
1. The standard image is bigger/higher quality than with MSN, assuming you want to see people/let them see you.
2. I love clients who just flash in and say "Hi, RU busy today?"
"Sorry my friend - yes." "O.K. - CU later". Done...
3. Minor points/questions can be clarified so much more quickly than they can with E-mail ping-pong.
4. It comes from Estonia.
5. You can save money on calls to landlines and especially to cellphones.
6. Neat GUI.
Skype rocks!
