I voted "other"... Aug 13, 2008

Lately, there's been no such thing as "little or no work." I wish I had some leisure time!

There is missing option: "a little bit of everything".

Unfortunately there's no such thing.

Read! Aug 13, 2008

Missing option: read books/magazines. I hope people still read traditional books, newspapers or magazines and do not only "stare at their computer" in search of hot news

a little bit of everything Aug 13, 2008

If you have a house with backyard or a big garden, there is always easy to find something to do. I feel the same way with the company. Increasing the Trados memory (I am not so experienced with WinAlign, but I always try to save the translations that way, who knows, some day they can help to somebody) or just clean the window of the office, or just look in the old dictionary or a book (do you remember the past poll about books/dictionaries never used?), or, like the people says in the United St... If you have a house with backyard or a big garden, there is always easy to find something to do. I feel the same way with the company. Increasing the Trados memory (I am not so experienced with WinAlign, but I always try to save the translations that way, who knows, some day they can help to somebody) or just clean the window of the office, or just look in the old dictionary or a book (do you remember the past poll about books/dictionaries never used?), or, like the people says in the United States, just take my time, listen some music, enyjoy the time with my children, there are so much beautiful things in life.

Sometimes (I am old-fashioned) I like writing letters to the translators and share not just professional things, but also the important or lovely moments from the personal life. In somebody's family a child was born, somebody is in the hospital, one of my best colleagues writing her dissertation, it is just a nice thing to call her and simply ask, hi, how are you doing? As I never will have the complete family again and I have just 2 relatives, for me they are my family. And there is no nice plant without pouring with water: the friendship is living and growing if you share with your friends what you have.
On this Sunday we are going to one of my best customers, just visit him, just see their garden, just...for chat, for drinking a good cup of coffee, for doing nothing.

And, if the kids are by dad, I like sometimes being alone, just clean the house, cooking, listening jazz (sometimes go to the jam session and sing) or just lay down with a good book (I love Dostoyevsky, it is so-o-o beautiful Russian language), (last time I read in English the famous "How to be a Brit") or cross-stitch.
And last but not least, my favourite - opera and classical music.
An hour of listening Mozart's music or just a part of Don Carlos can ispire me to continue my work for a whole night.
Sunny days for all of you...
Cheers, Liza

Any of them... Aug 13, 2008

... apart from staring at the computer, and a lot more. I've got a long list of stuff to do once I run out of work, with spending more time with my family at the top - so I answered 'other'. I haven't been in that situation for a long time, though, and so my list of things to do gets longer and longer...

Get some air... Aug 13, 2008

A little bit everything would be my reply too, but my first move is to get out and get some fresh air (with my mobile to check for emails once in while just in case I have to drag myself back home). Catch up on non work related tasks that have been building up is second, then maybe a combination of all your options if there still isn't any work.

Other Aug 13, 2008

There's rarely little or no work. When there's not too much work, I do the paperwork.

And if by chance I'm done with it, I do whatever I please: help my husband with his work, do voluntary work, exercise, go walking or shopping, read books, go out with friends... well, whatever...

But if the question was: what are you doing when there's no work at the time you should be working, then I'm never in that situation....

As I'm 34 y.o., I refuse to spend my best working years in front of a TV, so I search some potential clients.

Missing answer here, too Aug 13, 2008

Sorry to say, but there is a missing answer here as well.

Once again, the "Other" answer is used as an umbrella that integrates so many different answers that the results of the poll will be hard to make sense of. The answer I would have liked to see is "Marketing my services". This is a rather general answer, but it tells you that a freelancer is taking care of business instead of relaxing or doing personal things they don't otherwise have the time to do. In fact, I think the above three activities would have covered pretty much all answers for this poll.

When I say I'm marketing my services, I may be writing or updating a website, compiling lists of potential clients to contact, writing in blogs and attaching my website address to the post, making cold calls or cold visits, writing an article to post to my website, etc. These are all activities most of us do when we are not translating. I wish this answer had been offered.

For lack of a better answer, and since I wanted to contribute to this poll rather than take away from it, I did not answer "Other". I instead answered "Looking for new clients", even though it is not entirely true (I also may be getting existing clients addicted to my services). Still, that will provide a more meaningful result as it is still closer to what I really do than "Other".

Well... Aug 13, 2008

I'm sure the poll didn't mean THE ONLY THING you do. Because I am sure there are many things to do when the rope around your neck gets a bit loose. It actually means, the main thing that you prefer to do when there is no work or little work. And OTHER is an option for anything not listed here, like smoking a joint, climbing a mountain or going to Vegas. I personally try to spend more time with my family. I'm gonna be a daddy in one month. Things will change a lot then... See more
