Bit Sever shoots with the new FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G
My name is Bit Sever and I'd describe myself as a wanderlust-driven photographer and videographer, on a mission to capture the essence of cultures around the globe. Through my work, I strive to unveil the raw authenticity of diverse nations, favouring remote and less developed destinations where the soul of a place truly shines. Most of my work lately focuses on creating a travel series called 'OdBita Pot' which is being broadcast on National television in Slovenia. In the series my brother and I attempt to showcase every continent, so we usually pick the destinations that are not packed with tourists. My travels are usually taking three to four weeks but this time it was a short 10-day trip to the heart of Jordanian desert.
Wadi Rum desert is known for its beauty and Martian-type orange landscapes. My girlfriend and I joined up with some locals who showed us the hidden beauty of the desert and explained how Bedouin tribes live alongside camels, surrounded by the unique orange dunes.
Despite being previously briefed on the technical details of the lens, I was still surprised how small and light it was in the hand. In a way it reminded me of my early days in photography when all I had were standard kit lenses that were cheaply built, noisy and suffered with poor image quality. Not this lens though; despite its size, it's well made, solid and the focusing was practically silent.
The image quality was as I expected from a Sony G lens - crisp across the frame with good contrast and minimal distortion. The focus in particular was extremely quick and accurate. There was a situation where I photographed a man siting indoors in very low light, with his face only illuminated by a fireplace, and the camera never once struggled to track his eye as he moved.
Focus breathing can be most noticeable when filming videos and changing the focus point from foreground to background, which can be very distracting to watch and can confuse a viewer easily. With this lens I found the built-in suppression worked well and I hardly noticed any shift in the frame as I switched focus points. I also really like the manual aperture ring when I'm filming, and the ability to disable the clicks meant I could change the aperture silently. Another feature that was a pleasant surprise was the close focus capability - down to only 0.19m - which satisfied all my macro needs during the trip, and I can't say I needed to get closer to the subject than I got.
The balance between the lens and body is very important on long shooting days especially when you are filming videos because it plays a major role when you need to hold your shot steady. The more it is balanced in your hand the better the end result is going to be. I found out that it was a bit lighter than I would prefer when attached to my Alpha 7R V, but it was a perfect combination with the Alpha 7C II since it is much lighter, and the total weight is distributed more evenly.
If I'm being honest, I have to say that Sony lenses haven't disappointed me yet. I have been using them since I got my first Alpha 7S II back in 2016. They are a perfect fit with Sony cameras and supporting the features new cameras have to offer and this lens is no exception.
As a travel photographer and videographer, I am trying to best showcase the authenticity of every destination I visit. That often means that places are remote and hard to reach which often leads to difficult hikes and sometimes even climbing. My camera backpack is usually filled with two camera bodies, four lenses, two microphones, led lights, extra batteries, chargers, cables, laptop and a tripod.
In my ten-year career I am already noticing back pain and because of that it is even more crucial to keep my backpack as light as possible without sacrificing the quality of the end product. A lens like this proves it's possible; a fast zoom in a compact size with excellent quality.
I can see this lens being a permanent fixture for future travels, since the focal range is a versatile fit for shooting 'on-the-go'. I found that shooting wide open at 50mm gave superb results for portraits with nice bokeh and a good separation between subject and background.
Its compact size does not attract as much attention as large zoom lenses which allowed me to capture people at their most authentic, such as man pouring a tea, sitting on the wall or just an amazing Martian-like landscape before the sunrise where I had to climb the rocks to get the shot.

Mijn naam is Bit Sever en ik ben een fotograaf en videograaf die wordt gedreven door wanderlust. Ik leef ervoor om de essentie van culturen over de hele wereld vast te leggen. In mijn beelden wil ik de pure eigenheid van verschillende landen tonen. Het liefst reis ik naar afgelegen en minder ontwikkelde bestemmingen waar de ware ziel van een plek echt straalt. Mijn meest recente werk is 'OdBita Pot', vrij vertaald als 'Het onbetreden pad', een reisserie die wordt uitgezonden op de Sloveense publieke televisie. In deze serie proberen mijn broer en ik elk continent aan bod te laten komen. We kiezen voornamelijk bestemmingen die niet worden platgelopen door toeristen. Hoewel mijn reizen meestal drie tot vier weken duren, was het dit keer maar een korte tiendaagse trip naar het hart van de woestijn in Jordanië.
De Wadi Rum woestijn staat bekend om zijn prachtige landschappen in diverse tinten rood en oranje. Mijn vriendin en ik gingen samen met enkele locals op pad. Ze toonden ons de verborgen schoonheid van de woestijn, en vertelden over de bedoeïenenstammen die er te midden van unieke zandduinen samenleven met kamelen.
Voor mijn vertrek kreeg ik informatie over de technische details van de lens, maar ik was toch erg onder de indruk van zijn compacte formaat en lichte gewicht. Hij herinnerde me een beetje aan de begindagen van mijn carrière als fotograaf. Toen werkte ik enkel met kitlenzen die met goedkope materialen waren gemaakt, veel lawaai gaven en een slechte beeldkwaliteit hadden. Dat is bij deze lens uiteraard niet het geval. Ondanks zijn grootte is hij erg degelijk en stevig, en hij focust haast geluidloos.
De beeldkwaliteit was precies zoals ik verwacht van een Sony G-lens: haarscherp over het hele frame, een uitstekend contrast en een minimale vervorming. Vooral de focus was bijzonder snel en nauwkeurig. Ik wilde een man fotograferen die in een donkere tent zat. Zijn gezicht werd enkel verlicht door een vuur, en de camera kon elke oogbeweging perfect volgen.
Focus breathing valt het meest op als je filmt en de focus verandert van de voorgrond naar de achtergrond. De kijker kan dit als erg storend ervaren. De ingebouwde breathing-compensatie zorgde voor een goede onderdrukking, en het frame bleef haast hetzelfde als ik de focus veranderde. Ook de handmatige diafragmaring vond ik erg prettig tijdens het filmen. Bovendien is het mogelijk om het sluitergeluid uit te schakelen, zodat ik het diafragma geluidloos kon wijzigen. Een andere aangename verrassing was het zeer korte focusvermogen van de lens tot amper 0,19 m. Daardoor kon ik alle macrofoto’s nemen die ik wilde, en hoefde ik niet dichter bij mijn onderwerp te komen dan ik al was.
Op lange opnamedagen is het evenwicht tussen de camera en de lens erg belangrijk. Dat speelt vooral een rol als je filmt, want dan is het cruciaal dat je beeld stabiel blijft. Een betere balans in je hand leidt tot een beter eindresultaat. Ik vond de lens iets te licht om te gebruiken op mijn Alpha 7R V, maar in combinatie met de Alpha 7C II was hij perfect. Die camera is veel lichter, dus het gewicht werd gelijkmatiger verdeeld.
Eerlijk gezegd hebben Sony lenzen me nog nooit teleurgesteld. Ik gebruik ze al sinds 2016, toen ik met de Alpha 7S II begon te fotograferen. Ze zijn perfect compatibel met Sony camera’s, ook als er nieuwe functies aan werden toegevoegd. En deze lens is daar geen uitzondering op.
Als reisfotograaf en -videograaf streef ik ernaar om de authenticiteit van al mijn bestemmingen zo waarheidsgetrouw als mogelijk over te brengen. Vaak betekent dit dat ik op moeilijk bereikbare plekken moet werken, en daar soms enkel kan komen door een zware wandeltocht of beklimming. Mijn uitrusting bestaat meestal uit twee camera’s, vier lenzen, twee microfoons, ledlampen, extra batterijen, laders, kabels, een laptop en een statief.
Ik ben nu 10 jaar professioneel fotograaf, en ik heb al last van rugpijn. Daarom is het essentieel dat mijn rugzak zo weinig mogelijk weegt zonder te hoeven inleveren op de kwaliteit van mijn beelden. Deze lens bewijst dat het mogelijk is om een snelle zoom te combineren met een compact formaat en een uitstekende kwaliteit.
Het flexibele brandpuntsbereik maakt deze lens perfect voor onderweg, dus hij wordt een vaste waarde in mijn toekomstige reisfotografie. Fotograferen met een volledig open diafragma van 50 mm resulteerde in prachtige portretten met mooie bokeh en een goede scheiding tussen het onderwerp en de achtergrond.
Dankzij zijn compacte formaat valt deze lens minder op dan een grote zoomlens, en kon ik mensen in al hun puurheid vastleggen. Ik fotografeerde onder meer een man die thee aan het schenken was, en een andere man die op een muurtje zat. Maar de lens was ook fantastisch voor panoramische beelden. Zo klom ik een keer voor zonsopgang de rotsen op om een foto te maken van het adembenemende marslandschap.

Texto de origen - alemán Nach dem großen Bahnunglück in Pécrot am 27. März 2001 wurde ein Sicherheitssystem benötigt, das Züge, die ein rotes Signal überfahren, automatisch zum Stillstand bringt.
Weil ETCS zum Zeitpunkt des Unglücks nicht kurzfristig zur Verfügung stehen würde, wurde ein neues, einfaches und verhältnismäßig kostengünstiges belgisches Zugbeeinflussungssystem entwickelt, das als Übergangssicherheitssystem zwischen MEMOR und ETCS dienen sollte.
Im September 2009 wurde das TBL1+ Paket in Belgien zugelassen und konnte an den Schienen und in den Zügen angebracht werden.
In diesem Rahmen hat die Nationale Gesellschaft der Belgischen Eisenbahnen (NMBS) im November 2013 eine Umrüstungsanzeige beim Eisenbahn-Bundesamt (EBA) für die Ausrüstung der Triebfahrzeugbaureihe HLD 77, Varianten 5 & 6 mit dem belgischen Zugbeeinflussungssystem TBL1+ eingereicht.
Weil 100 dieser Triebfahrzeuge über eine Inbetriebnahmegenehmigung auf dem deutschen Streckennetz verfügen, muss die NMBS die Änderung an den Fahrzeugen, gemäß der EU-VO 402-2013, auf ihre sicherheitlichen Auswirkungen untersuchen.
Durch die Entscheidung des EBA, dass die Änderung eine inbetriebnahmepflichtige Änderung darstellt, müssen die Dokumente der CSM-RA einer unabhängigen Bewertungsstelle (Zertifiziert nach DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020) zur Bewertung vorgelegt werden.

Omdat het ETCS op dat moment nog niet meteen beschikbaar zou zijn, werd een nieuw en relatief goedkoop Belgisch treinbeïnvloedingssysteem ontwikkeld dat als overgangssysteem tussen Memor en ETCS moest fungeren.
In september 2009 werden TBL1+ bakens in België toegestaan en konden ze tussen de sporen en in treinen geïnstalleerd worden.
Als gevolg hiervan diende de NMBS in november 2013 bij de Duitse federale spoorwegorganisatie EBA een aanvraag tot aanpassing van tractievoertuigen in. Die bestond erin varianten 5 en 6 van de locomotievenserie HLD 77 met het Belgische treinbeïnvloedingssysteem TBL1+ uit te rusten.
Omdat honderd van deze locomotieven over een vergunning tot indienststelling op het Duitse spoorwegnet beschikken, moet de NMBS volgens de Europese uitvoeringsverordening 402/2013 onderzoeken welke impact deze aanpassingen hebben op de veiligheid van haar voertuigen.
De EBA heeft bepaald dat deze aanpassing vergunningplichtig is, dus moeten de documenten van de GVM-risicoanalyse voorgelegd worden aan een onafhankelijke beoordelingsinstantie die volgens de in Duitsland geldende normen ISO/IEC 17020 gecertificeerd is.

When I just obtained my Master’s degree in Literary and Audiovisual Translation, I wasn’t entirely
sure if I wanted to become a translator, so I took a different career path. After working
many years as a press and communications assistant and later as a language
teacher (Dutch and Spanish), I felt the urge to dive into a new adventure in
which I can 100% indulge in my passion for different languages and cultures. Therefore I am shifting my linguist career a litle bit and became a self-employed translator, proofreader and language teacher.
Studying languages and improving my language skills has always been a part of my life,
not only because I grew up in multilingual Belgium, but also because I am an enthusiastic
language nerd.
