Cognitive Distortions
The Leashing Power of Distorted Maps and Mapping
You have a fallible brain! And so do I. We all do. This means that cognitive distortions are inevitably
involved in how we explain things and make sense of things. When this happens, our very way of making
meaning can itself becomes sick and dis-empowering. Cognitive distortions are the thinking patterns that
we use in constructing meaning which ultimately dis-empower us because they create limitations. These
are mostly the primitive ways of thinking that create our faulty perceptions which we learn as children.
Yet when we use these ways of thinking and reasoning as adults, we inevitably create ill-formed and
inaccurate mental models that imprison us in non-sense and limiting possibilities. These make up our
meaning attribution and explanatory styles. Simply recognizing then offers a great first step to clarity
and choice. With these cognitive distortions we set up our “buttons” so that certain things can get us and
“push our buttons.” Then we react in unthinking and defensive ways. How cloudy and unclean is your
creation of meanings?
Cognitive Distortions Limitations that Leash and Self-Sabotage
1. Over-generalizing

4. Culpar
Pensamiento acusatorio que transfiere la culpa y la responsabilidad de un problema a algo o a alguien más.
Limita reconocer la propia responsabilidad.
Desperdicia la energía acusando a alguien.

Daña el poder de la responsabilidad.
5.Lectura de mente
Proyectar pensamientos, sentimientos e intuiciones en otros sin verificar si lo que nos “late”es real o no. Es confiar de más en nuestras intuiciones de la gente y verlo a través de nuestros filtros mentales en lugar de verificar nuestras interpretaciones y suposiciones. Limita ver y tratar a la persona con base en hechos o evidencia sensorial.
