Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.
It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard's name leading the list of "killed." He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message.
She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.
There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.
There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window.
She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams.
She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.
There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. But she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air.
Now her bosom rose and fell tumultuously. She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will--as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under hte breath: "free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body.
She did not stop to ask if it were or were not a monstrous joy that held her. A clear and exalted perception enabled her to dismiss the suggestion as trivial. She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.
There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination.
And yet she had loved him--sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in the face of this possession of self-assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!
"Free! Body and soul free!" she kept whispering.
Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhold, imploring for admission. "Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door--you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven's sake open the door."
"Go away. I am not making myself ill." No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window.
Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own. She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.
She arose at length and opened the door to her sister's importunities. There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory. She clasped her sister's waist, and together they descended the stairs. Richards stood waiting for them at the bottom.
Some one was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella. He had been far from the scene of the accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephine's piercing cry; at Richards' quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife.
When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills.

We have four sub-categories, namely EPCM, Quantity Surveying, Specialist Professional Services and Environmental. To date, our primary focus has been to establish long term relationships with Tier 1 EPCM service providers in order to secure their best project resources and deliver value through improved project performance.
What is “EPCM”?
EPCM is a term used to describe a strategy for contracting consulting services for projects and is the model identified in the Company Projects Way as being best suited to ensuring that we are able to effectively and efficiently build our future asset base. With this model, we contract with one company to provide:
- Engineering,
- Procurement and
- Construction Management services including Project Management and all other project support services.
What have we done so far?
Over the last few years we have identified seven Tier 1 EPCM Service Providers that we believe are best suited to execute our global project pipeline, currently valued at some US$95 billion. We have concluded long term Global Framework Agreements with these seven companies, have agreed Supplier Relations.
Why have we done this?
The principle reason for establishing these long term relationships is to become the customer of choice for our Tier 1 partners in order to secure the project resources that we will need to execute our projects through a period of very high global project activity and constrained resources.
Lessons Learned
The Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) and collaboration tools available are helping us to cement these partnerships. SRM workshops were held with all of the EPCM’s early in 2011, which were instrumental in establishing the strong relationships.

Texto de origen - portugués Uma semana após a aplicação do questioná¬rio, definiu-se intencionalmente uma nova visita a aproximadamente 10% da amostra, seleciona¬da aleatoriamente, com o intuito de mensurar essas duas variáveis. Todos os antropometristas foram treinados e padronizados na aferição das medidas 16. Foram utilizadas balanças da mar¬ca Secca (Uniscale, Alemanha), com precisão de lOOg e estadiômetros-padrão de alumínio (SN4010, Sanny, São Paulo, Brasil) com precisão de um milímetro. Os valores máximos de erro técnico de medida aceitáveis após o treinamento dos antropometristas basearam-se na publica¬ção de Cameron17.
Os indivíduos foram pesados descalços e com roupas leves. Para a mensuração da altura adotou-se o seguinte posicionamento: em pé, na posição ortostática, realizar uma inspiração má¬xima, sendo neste momento aferido a medida da altura no vertex da cabeça. Pessoas impossibili¬tadas de permanecer na posição recomendada, as mulheres grávidas no momento da entrevista ou que tiveram filhos nos seis meses anteriores à pesquisa foram excluídas da aferição das medi¬das antropométricas.
Os dados coletados foram duplamente digi¬tados no programa Epi Info, versão 6.04d (Cen¬ters for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Estados Unidos), com checagem de consistência. Utilizaram-se os valores de peso e altura contí¬nuos. O IMC foi calculado posteriormente, com base na equação: [IMC = peso(kg)/altura2 (m)], usando tanto os valores autorreferidos como os medidos. As duas variáveis geradas foram utiliza¬das posteriormente para a criação das variáveis categóricas: excesso de peso (IMC > 25,0kg/m2) e obesidade IMC (> 30,0kg/m2) 3.
Tomando como informação padrão os da¬dos medidos, para validação das informações de peso, altura e IMC contínuos, empregou-se o coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (CCI) 18 e as análises de Bland & Altman 19. Os resultados das análises de Bland & Altman 19 (relação en¬tre a diferença das medidas realizadas em dois momentos e a média das duas medidas) foram adaptados para o presente artigo, com a finali¬dade de enfatizar a variabilidade das diferenças entre os valores medidos e referidos. Those unable to maintain this position, women who were pregnant at the interview or women who had birthed a child up to six months before the study were excluded from the anthropometric tests.
The data collected was entered twice into the Epi Info™ program, version 6.04d (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, United States), and a consistency check was performed. Continuous weight and height values were used. The BMI was later calculated, based on the equation: [BMI = weight (kg)/height2 (m)] and using the self-reported as well as the measured values. The two variables generated were later used to create the following variable categories: excess weight (BMI > 25kg/m2) and obesity BMI (>30kg/m2) 3.
With the measured data as the information standard, the Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC)18 as well as Bland & Altman’s analyses19 were employed to validate continuous weight, height, and BMI information. For this article, the results of the Bland & Altman analyses19 (assesses the difference between the measurements taken at two separate moments and the mean of these two measurements) were adapted to emphasize the difference in variability between the measured and reported values. The figures present the difference between the means and the corresponding limits of agreement of 2SD (standard deviation), while the text presents the respective 95% confidence intervals (CI95%).

In a bibliometric study conducted between 1991 and 2010, Granados, et al. (2011) expose a growing number of articles on the subject. In the last five years researched, the number of publications jumped from 21 to 75, confirming the subject's increasing importance.
Social enterprises have emerged in a variety of contexts: a reduction in financial assistance from public and private entities to non-profit and charitable organizations, an attention to a strong and latent local need, and an entrepreneur's desire or personal need, among others. These diverse conjunctures influence the concept and management of SEs; however, they are always hybrid models that unite economic activity and positive social impact.

I am a Portuguese into English and English into Portuguese freelance translator based in the United States and Brazil. Although my bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as my doctoral coursework, are focused on comparative literature and Latin American studies, I have always been fascinated with the human body and focused all my elective coursework on biology, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology-related subjects.
