Texto de origen - inglés The splitting of a population into separate species requieres that subdivisions of the population become reproductively isolated from each other. The most straight-forward way for this to happen is for the subpopulations to become geographically separated.
The evolution of two populations of tuft-eared squirrels (Sciurus aberti) on the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon in the American Southwest is an example of allopatric speciation. Phenotipic and molecular characterization of these squirrels suggest that they evolved from de same parent population. The formidable canyon that separates them has reduced interpopulational gene flow to near zero. Consequently, the two populations have developed their own identities.
Speciation may also occur in the absence of any geographical barrier. This process, called sympatric speciation, requires that subpopulations develop reproductive isolation while they occupy the same territory.
